I don't think that's true. I am on the Harris/Walz campaign email list. All of her events that I have been invited to were free. I get a shitton of emails asking for money (lol) but none of the events cost anything but were first come, first serve.

Almost all of the presidential race events this cycle have been held in swing states only: Pennsylvania, Michigan, Nevada, Georgia, North Carolina, Arizona, and Wisconsin. Trump has gone a few more places (New York and California), but not many. Time will tell if this is an effective strategy or not. Biden didn’t campaign in person all that much because of covid, and he won anyway.

The big rallies are always free; it’s a legal requirement, I believe. However, they aren’t scheduled long in advance: usually, it’s just a few days. The fact that Trump’s MSG rally is scheduled so far in advance is actually really unusual. For the big rallies, you just show up, park your car, and, if necessary, you hop on a bus or trolley and are brought into the building or stadium the rally is in. There will usually be merch to buy. Some of Trump’s loons tried to say Kamala was bussing people in for her rallies, but this is all normal considering a lot of people have disabilities and cannot walk long distances.

Keep in mind that there are a ton of laws revolving around campaign financing that all political candidates must follow. Democrats get nailed for breaking them just as often as Republicans. Any big event must have free tickets, but private, more intimate events can charge by ticket or plate. Speaking of: I don’t remember hearing at all that Kamala held any big ticket donor events since she succeeded Biden. This would be very unusual, but, to be honest, she’s made an astronomical amount of money for the party - over a billion dollars. Trump tends to sit on his donations like a fat dragon, though, which makes the Senate Republicans, in particular, really asshurt. Rumor is that they are struggling hard for money since Trump has control of it all, and their internal polling is pretty dire considering this cycle favors them.

From the anecdotal reporting I've seen, the GOP has been broke af this election cycle and not able to support down ticket candidates as much as they usually do because Trump sucks all the funding up like a goddamn vacuum.

An example of this would be Kari Lake in the AZ Senate race. Her funding was shrunk down to (comparatively) nothing a few months ago in favor of other, more likely to succeed candidates elsewhere in the country. Which is wild because AZ is a coveted slot for the GOP. It means either they're giving up on AZ, or they never thought Kari Lake had a chance.

My feelings are on the latter because she's fuckin WILDLY unpopular with all but the most deep seated MAGAts from what I can tell.

Not doxing myself, but I can tell you that one of my senators, a GOP, is up for reelection this year and I have seen exactly zero TV ads, lawn signs, or advertising in any form for him. Absolutely nothing. His Democratic opponent has been everywhere, though. This is highly unusual. Other GOP candidates seem starved out, too, but I'm seeing my district and all the neighboring districts' Democrats everywhere on TV. Trump has all the GOP's money, which is another reason why they kiss his ass.

MAGA is a cult. Once you recognize it as a cult - with the understanding that, for around 35% of people voting for Trump, he is not merely a politician but their guru, their holy one - his appeal makes more sense. He is a classic authoritarian and MAGA is a textbook cult of personality. The great schism Trump hath wrought has torn apart the GOP for a generation or more. They are desperate to get that 2016 high they felt after his surprise victory, but the numbers continue to be against them. Trump may scrape out a win, again on a technicality, but he's a broken man: incoherent, unorganized, controlled by narcissistic rage, eaten up with anger and grievances. I have no idea what a second term from him would be like, but it would definitely be worse than the first.

Now, there are voters who don't like Trump but can't bring themselves to vote for a Democrat. They are a small minority. These are the voters Kamala is trying to capture. Personally, I think they're way overthinking things, but here in the US we have developed this weird attitude that our votes are somehow sacred, and politicians act like they are, too. I've never had that attitude: I acknowledge that most politicians are total assholes, so I vote for the one who is less of an asshole. It's that simple for me.

The general sentiment I've found is this: "I hate [X] more than I dislike Trump". X can be replaced with any group of your choice. Blacks, Jews, Mexicans, Muslims, Gays, Trannies, Democrats, Liberals, etc. His supporters don't care about how bad he is because he isn't a Democrat, and he hates the same groups they hate. Many of his supporters just want other people to suffer even at the cost of their own well-being. Punish the "correct" people and I'll ignore the rest, type of mentality.

It doesn't matter that Trump is a rapist, pedophile, narcissist, sociopath, pathological liar, traitor, insurrectionist, incompetent, has sold America's secrets to foreign adversaries, has colluded with foreign Adversaries, and wants to be a dictator. At least he's not a lib.

He is just a miserable man. Period. Any victory he has is pyrrhic. When he won the election in 2016 and Hillary didn't contest it, even though she won the popular vote, he still stewed about how "the popular vote means nothing" (which is interesting because before the election he was going on an on about how the popular vote is more important). Even when he's crowing about his "accomplishments" he always has to add that he succeeded where others failed. He lives to stroke his own ego as much as he lives to have others to stroke it.

I'm not going to say something as stupid as "money can't buy happiness" or anything like that. But, I do think that there is something in human nature that requires a certain amount of struggle to feel like one's life has meaning and purpose. People like Trump have never had to struggle against anything in their lives, so they have to manufacture something to struggle against. Some rich people channel that desire into things like sports or hobbies or big game hunting or whatever. Or charitable activities to make the world a better place. Trump has mostly channeled it into business ventures that either made him a lot more money or led to bankruptcy.
Here's the thing: I have known many many rich people who are gambling addicts. I've seen people feed six figures into a slot machine every weekend like it's nothing, and then act like they're on top of the world when they "win" $30k of it back. Finally, I came to the conclusion that for these people making money isn't a thrill anymore. Gambling is the only way they can feel the excitement they used to feel when they made a lot of money.
Trump got as far as he could as a real estate developer and then decided to be a reality TV star. Being president is just another achievement for the sake of achievement. And of course there's the ego aspect, he loves the adulation, even if it comes from the dumbest people in the country. I think Jan. 6 was less about overturning the election and more about making him feel important.
