Have you ever read about Millerism? It's a wild story. This dude William Miller was a Baptist from upstate New York who was really into doing his own half baked biblical exegesis, in the way that protestants do. He became convinced that Numbers and Ezekiel provided a foundation for "a day" in the bible being equivalent to a real life year, and then used that assumption to conclude that Daniel prophesied the second coming of Jesus in October of 1843. He was a charismatic leader and convinced many people that this was the True & Honest exegesis and that they should prepare the way by giving up their material belongings.

People sold their businesses, land and farms, gave the proceeds to charity, and took their children out of school (one such child who grew up without an education due to his Millerist parents is the famous cereal pioneer Will Keith Kellogg). Who needs things like money and education when Jesus is coming back to usher in the endtimes next year ? Sneedful to say, none of that shit happened, and all of these self-declared Biblical scholars were left holding the bag. The 7th Day Adventists of today are descended from Millerites who couldn't give it up even after all that and went back to the drawing board.

Basically my point here is that even if someone is 100% convinced of an outcome, and ready to put their entire life savings into it, they might still just actually be retarded.
