He fled to Taiwan (a country with little official diplomatic relations with the US and no extradition treaty) and the US threw their weight around and got the Taiwanese to hand him back. Or Assange, who had to spend a decade essentially under house arrest in an embassy, only for him to eventually be forced to leave and got arrested. If you made an enemy of the US government, your only real hope of relative freedom is going to the US's enemies.
