Investigation ongoing into death of 19-year-old Walmart employee in Halifax - Horrific allegations emerging online that the teenager was killed in a walk-in oven.

The investigation into the sudden death of a 19-year-old Walmart employee over the weekend is ongoing in Halifax.

The woman’s identity has not been released, but the Maritime Sikh Society confirmed to CTV News that she was a member of their community. Members say she moved to Nova Scotia two to three years ago.

In a news release Monday, Halifax Regional Police said they were called to a sudden death at the Walmart at 6990 Mumford Road around 9:30 p.m. Saturday.

According to police, a 19-year-old woman who was employed at the store was found dead inside the building.

The store has remained closed since Saturday night while the investigation is ongoing. There is no word on when it might reopen.

HRP Const. Martin Cromwell says police are aware of online speculation about the woman’s cause of death, but would not confirm nor address the information being shared.

“The investigation is complex,” said Cromwell.

“We understand the public is involved, and we just wanted to encourage the public to be patient with our investigation and be mindful that there are family members and coworkers involved.”

Cromwell says Halifax police are coordinating with the appropriate agencies to help with the investigation.

The Department of Labour told CTV News it has not conducted its own investigation into the incident yet.

“The Department of Labour, Skills and Immigration is aware of the situation and continues to engage with our partners the Halifax Regional Police who have control of the scene,” a spokesperson said.

The department said it is unable to share further information at this time.

Walmart released a statement on Sunday, stating the company was aware of the incident and working to support its staff.

“We are heartbroken and our deepest thoughts are with our associate and their family. We extend our sincerest condolences to those who were closest to them,” said spokesperson Amanda Moss in the statement.

“We’re also supporting our associates during this incredibly difficult time and have provided access to 24/7 virtual care and will provide on-site support, including grief counselling.”

CTV News reached out to Walmart on Monday, but the company declined to comment further.

This has been all over Canadian news, and is spreading further. Some huge occupational health and safety implications.

The locals (and employees of the closed store) have been sharing details that the media aren’t reporting.

Apparently is was common for employees to stand in front of the open oven door to warm up when temperatures were cold.

The walk-in oven used to be a closet in the back room that was converted.

The girl’s mother also worked at that store and was supposedly on shift when it happened.

Of all the ways to go, being cooked to death in a closet oven is up there as one of the worst I can think of.

I actually hope she was murdered first, as terrible as that would be.

Not very good at Hide and go Sikh was she?
Not at all, but she was.....smoking hot

I’m calling it now: Her family will flee to India to avoid being questioned about her death any further. This is common among the Indians and Pakis who do this shit in order to avoid scrutiny.
Yeah thats how it frequently goes, and if they do the investigation will be dropped and the media will act like it never happened. The government and cops won't do shit to prevent them from doing it either because it solves alot of problems and keeps this shit from having to be put out there publicly

Apparently that’s how it went down.

Not sure why no one would hit the emergency stop button as soon as they knew she was in there.

The location is 6990 Mumford Road for anyone who is curious.

Gross incompetence seems to be likely in this case as well. Wouldn’t surprise me, seeing as how hitting the emergency stop button in that scenario should have been common sense.

What did I miss?
world war poo. Hindus are killing sikh seperatists in the West. They've done a good job assassinating sikhs in canada but haven't managed yet in the US. Canada booted out the indian diplomats last week; we managed to stop an assassination with our wonderful glowie with in a glowie environment.

relations have soured between india and the west since the indian govermment was caught red handed both times.

It's very strange to me with how safety conscious everything is these days that their isn't emergency stop and door release on the inside

This sounds mega sus. If she accidentally locked herself in and it got turned on her death would NOT have been instantaneous, she would have had time to try and leave or use the emergency stop or something. These types of ovens which are this big have had emergency stop and open systems to stop this exact thing from happening for decades. The claims that employees heard her and "could do nothing" are even worse. A woman is burning to death and you can't, I don't know, grab a fire extinguisher and fucking break the oven open? Close the gas valves?

Sussy.

Unfortunately, shit breaks. Got trapped in a walk-in cooler for about half an hour because the button broke. Luckily, it was before shift, so someone eventually came in to get produce and found me. It was fixed later that day, but Walmart corporate might have known about this break and not gotten off their asses to fix it speedily. From experience, larger corporations seem to have issues getting their shit repaired in timely fashion. Regardless of what happened, and I agree, it is very suspect, Walmart is about to be sued into some serious shit.

This whole thing makes even less sense after reading that! What the hell was going on?

RIP.. Hell of a way to go. :(

Apparently this is where the emergency button is located. I’m even more convinced this was an honor killing.
yep almost every walkin freezer/oven will have a release button on the inside to prevent people from getting locked inside. So unless she was fucked up real good on booze or drugs, or someone physically blocked the door/put a padlock on it she'd have no problem getting out. I'm voting that it is a cover up and someone dumped her body in it.

I need to know more about both victim and victim family to form an opinion.

Could it be an honor killing? Perhaps, but I'm not aware of that being a Sikh thing.

I'm thinking I need to know more about her father. The assassinated Sikh separatist in Canada was a trade electrician, so perhaps the victim's father was an activist and this was a simple message...?

Will they clean up and keep using the oven?

I wonder where the line is for what type of equipment you just have to replace for reasons of food-safety legal stuff or for appearing right and moral to any future customers.

There's been at least a couple places near me where employees have been pushed into walkin freezers and shot by joggers and those can't really be replaced.
