The investigation into the sudden death of a 19-year-old Walmart employee over the weekend is ongoing in Halifax.

The woman’s identity has not been released, but the Maritime Sikh Society confirmed to CTV News that she was a member of their community. Members say she moved to Nova Scotia two to three years ago.

In a news release Monday, Halifax Regional Police said they were called to a sudden death at the Walmart at 6990 Mumford Road around 9:30 p.m. Saturday.

According to police, a 19-year-old woman who was employed at the store was found dead inside the building.

The store has remained closed since Saturday night while the investigation is ongoing. There is no word on when it might reopen.

HRP Const. Martin Cromwell says police are aware of online speculation about the woman’s cause of death, but would not confirm nor address the information being shared.

“The investigation is complex,” said Cromwell.

“We understand the public is involved, and we just wanted to encourage the public to be patient with our investigation and be mindful that there are family members and coworkers involved.”

Cromwell says Halifax police are coordinating with the appropriate agencies to help with the investigation.

The Department of Labour told CTV News it has not conducted its own investigation into the incident yet.

“The Department of Labour, Skills and Immigration is aware of the situation and continues to engage with our partners the Halifax Regional Police who have control of the scene,” a spokesperson said.

The department said it is unable to share further information at this time.

Walmart released a statement on Sunday, stating the company was aware of the incident and working to support its staff.

“We are heartbroken and our deepest thoughts are with our associate and their family. We extend our sincerest condolences to those who were closest to them,” said spokesperson Amanda Moss in the statement.

“We’re also supporting our associates during this incredibly difficult time and have provided access to 24/7 virtual care and will provide on-site support, including grief counselling.”

CTV News reached out to Walmart on Monday, but the company declined to comment further.

This has been all over Canadian news, and is spreading further. Some huge occupational health and safety implications.

The locals (and employees of the closed store) have been sharing details that the media aren’t reporting.

Apparently is was common for employees to stand in front of the open oven door to warm up when temperatures were cold.

The walk-in oven used to be a closet in the back room that was converted.

The girl’s mother also worked at that store and was supposedly on shift when it happened.

Of all the ways to go, being cooked to death in a closet oven is up there as one of the worst I can think of.

I actually hope she was murdered first, as terrible as that would be.

>young people come here with hopes and dreams to work hard and this is what happens

They get locked in a fucking oven and baked to death? Thats the most suspicious "welp, anyway!" Response Ive ever heard.
My immediate reaction to that non-comment was that he's heard rumors but has been instructed by police to not say anything.

There's gotta be a breaker switch somewhere too...
Unless the walmart was doing something sketchy like wiring it right in, bypassing safety shit.

And if it was criminal, we probably won't hear anything until somebody catches charges.

So they listened to her screaming for 20 minutes and nobody thought to boogie on over to the hardware department and grab a pry bar and an axe?

That's why I'm thinking she was dead when she went in. Somebody would have hit the emergency stop button or opened the door if they heard someone in there being baked alive.
Let me get this straight. Someone walked into an oven with a glass door and shut herself in there or was accidentally shut in there, the emergency exit plunger didn't work, the oven was either on when she got in or got turned on, and she sat in there burning and nobody was able to turn it off or open the door? Yeah right.
it'd be interesting to know what percent of that shift were pajeets. they're not very smart and have a casual attitude to health and safety. if it's 15-20%, I would not be surprised that this was an accident where 1 pajeet thought it'd be a funny prank to turn on the oven while she was in there but then didn't understand that she was being burned alive or didn't understand the various safety mechanisms to turn the oven off. These are people who kill each other by blowing compressed air up their ass once or twice a week.

Slight PL, but I'd hazard to guess the store would be anywhere from 25% on the low end to upwards of 50% to 60% or more for later / weekend shifts. Based on the demographics of walmarts in my area not too terribly far from this one.
I'm left with more questions than answers, and if there is a criminal element to this, we might not hear any updates for a year. Canadian cops are slack.

It's very strange to me with how safety conscious everything is these days that their isn't emergency stop and door release on the inside
There is, which means the door would have to be jammed or blocked from the outside for her to die in there. Mum burned her for having a white boyfriend or trying to move out of the house.

Thinking about it more, I'd almost guess she was knocked out or at least hit hard in the head and put in there.

She'd probably be too dazed, in panic, and in pain to find the emergency button (If it wasn't tampered with) and would probably just be screaming and flailing about.

Sikhs are extremely nice people irl, but one of the religious reasons for carrying daggers is they must be ready to kill a muslim at any point lol
Officially, it's "So they are always ready to fight injustice"

Unofficially, yeah, pretty much. They were pretty peaceful, but dared to criticise Islam.

In the distant past, a Muslim ruler issued a "peaceful summons" to some of their their religious leaders to "debate religious philosophy".

When they arrived (Unarmed), the Muslim ruler had them arrested and executed. After that, the Sikhs made it one of their religious rules to basically never be caught unarmed again.

There was a female employee of a hospital that died in an autoclave. She got stuck in there.
And yeah, it's as horrific as you could imagine.
This one must be on the same level, probably even worse since it's a Wal-Mart and such ovens are in all the stores.

I can't imagine training not covering the emergency button so this might be a murder even.

Such a bizarre incident. It reads like something straight out of a Final Destination movie. I'm betting foul play, with a very remote chance of extreme incompetence.
Foul play no doubt. Either her family, or maybe a jealous boyfriend she worked with?
I can't imagine training not covering the emergency button so this might be a murder even.
There would have to be so many fuck ups for it not to be murder. Unless she was dead or knocked out when she was put in the oven or the door was being held shut, SOMEBODY should have been able to get her out though.
There have been a couple mid to high profile for local news workplace deaths in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia in the last couple years, though.

What was the critical mass of jeet there?

It was middle of the night in a snow storm right before Christmas, I didn't see any Jeets honestly, Though Jeets are being flooded into small Scotia towns en mass.
Small town grocery stores are starting to carry curry and other jeetslop and discontinue normal white people food.

Fiancé says her tiny town is being flooded and it's an ancient fishing town with not really going on.

They hate you and your culture and want you to die.

I can believe it was sheer negligence, considering that there was a case of a firefighter chief going around starting fires, and the one that killed two or three people could have obviously been prevented.
By just, opening, the fucking door from outside.
I also recall a case in Sydney where a women was strangled due to her scarf being caught in the escalators. My first reaction was "How? There's an emergency stop button at the beginning and end of the escalator". I'd like to think I'm clear minded enough during stress to know what to do but I won't bet on it because I've never been put in such a situation. If it's an accident, it sucks. There's been so many of these "combinations of coincidences leading to demise" cases. That Chinese girl who drowned in water tanks at some NYC motel during an episode, the kid who fell behind freezers and starved to death was another.
(The air circulation was there too so it got rid of the putrid smell.)

I'm leaning on murder though. Was the victim fat enough that they can't even move in there? I'd assume they'd panic enough to scratch and bang around to trigger the button anyway?
Now if the button wasn't functioning, it's homicide by negligence. I hope his family gets a nice payout from Wal-Mart.

This sounds mega sus. If she accidentally locked herself in and it got turned on her death would NOT have been instantaneous, she would have had time to try and leave or use the emergency stop or something. These types of ovens which are this big have had emergency stop and open systems to stop this exact thing from happening for decades. The claims that employees heard her and "could do nothing" are even worse. A woman is burning to death and you can't, I don't know, grab a fire extinguisher and fucking break the oven open? Close the gas valves?

Sussy.
Let's see...
1. The button didn't work or she really panicked, or she's just too fat to trigger it after somehow being able to lock herself in.
2. To be fair, you're not going to break open one of those ovens. They're designed against that. I bet even a fire extinguisher wouldn't be able to smash it open.

Well yeah that's more than enough space for a person, even if they're fat.
Seriously, it has an on/off button and a stop button, nobody in the store thought to press it?
3. It might be using its own gas system or the valves are inaccessible, or it's distributed from an external location, or nobody thought about it.

Yeah, I don't buy it being a total accident.

If it was negligence, we'll hear news long before we hear news on if it was an actual murder. The whole thing was probably caught on camera. Leaf walmarts have security cameras pretty much everywhere but the changing rooms and bathrooms.
