Biden's numbers cratered because the media was told to crater them. If they held the line like they do with Kamala, it would have just been a mediocre debate performance. It was their out to switch the candidate while saving face. Biden performed just as well as anyone observant of him would have expected him to and the media would have had just as easy a time to sweep it up for him as they always have had. Not to mention the massive political schism it opened up between two core DNC demographics. The DNC is used to sweeping its various special interest contradictions under the rug but this was just too big for even them to suppress. Trump was already highly competitive with Biden before that debate; even MN and VA were starting to look competitive. He didn't need help shitting his numbers up, his own performance in office was getting the job done just fine. The media didn't try and spin that debate because there's limits to how effective their damage control is and at a certain point even they will give up trying to prop up a candidate.

Swapping him out for Harris seemed like it was going to reunite the party but once the DNC concluded and it became apparent she had nothing new to offer(in addition to offering the Palestine protesters approximately dick) that unity promptly went away.

Consider the following: The Time Magazine article where they crowed about rigging the election was mostly about them rigging the media so that nothing Trump said got to the American people unfiltered. I still believe they fucked with the vote count -- printing ballots, harvesting ballots, etc. But a key factor in it was creating a false reality. McConnell throwing elections like a good little cuck to try and stop MAGA from replacing GOPinc also didn't help.

What's different in 2024? They can't do that with X being out of their control, with Meta (Facebook et all) flinching and deciding not to play ball, with citizen media on youtube et all having arguably more influence than CNN et all -- and Google being unwilling or unable to kill it with a third Adpocalypse.
