I was an advanced reader as a child and also had very little supervision, so I had the privilege of reading many of the classics without someone standing over my shoulder telling me what it was supposed to mean.

I also was somewhat impressed with the sufferings of the family, but felt that he went too far by the end, packing too many tragedies one on top of another creating pity-fatigue.

As for his attempts to insert Communism/Socialism, the worst I remember thinking is "Maybe unions are a good idea".
