I think that the biggest sign of them knowing that they're going to lose is how so many Democrat candidates up for election in Congress have distanced themselves from Harris and instead are talking about compromise and "reaching across the aisle" with Trump.
Hell, earlier this year, right after Kamala was selected as the nominee, lots of Democrat down ballot ads were talking about how a Senate majority is going to be the only thing that "stops Trump."
From Day One, I think that the party knew how weak of a candidate Kamala is.
I think she was selected because either Biden's "endorsement" after the coup was a final "eff you," or because all other Democrats saw the writing on the wall with this election and didn't want to ruin their careers by going up against Trump and only Kamala was delusional enough to want to do it. Kamala's ego would not have allowed herself to knowingly be the Democrats' sacrificial lamb.

The entire reason Harris got into politics in the first place seems to be money (why else go from Willie Brown's sidepiece to politician)
It would be horrifying, but most likely, if ruining the country was just to enrich herself and her friends financially
