I'm personally not convinced the majority of Puerto Ricans want full statehood. It's hard to get a firm grasp mainly because their political system is as fucked up as ours and whatever ruling party tends to write up ballot questions in a loaded, unclear way, and participation rates aren't exactly high.

I can understand a number of reasons why Puerto Ricans wouldn't want integration into the US. You got yahoos like Rich Santorum that wants to mandate Puerto Ricans can only use English.

Without a clear mandate for statehood by the people actually affected, forcing this could lead to political violence.

There are more Puerto Ricans who live in the mainland United States than on the island of Puerto Rico, so yes, they can vote, including for President. However, it is well-known in politics that Puerto Ricans tend to skew Democrat pretty heavily. The golden goose for the GOP is Cubans, which is why Kill Tony didn't shit on them.

I've never watched so much RSBN as I have in the past month or so. The constant grifting ads are hilarious. Thank you. This is something I've vaguely noticed but couldn't really put my finger on. First of all, I appreciate that there's a certain irony in complaining about people being assholes when I'm posting on KF. But there's a big difference between laughing at Rick Tomlinson for destroying his own life and say shooting out the window of a public library because they have a pride flag up (yes, this is a thing that actually happened, in Oregon I believe).
There's a certain brand of online asshole who makes hating everything their entire personality and goes around making shitty obnoxious posts about things that don't even have anything to do with politics, but then when you dig into their other posts, without exception they're always MAGAs. Trump's great success is that he recognized that there was this entire segment of the population- incels, manosphere types, christian nationalists, Karens who think that abusing servers is "asserting themselves" and, let's be honest, 90% of the people who post here- who weren't being catered to and were pissed off that the world wasn't going the way they thought it should. And again, it's easier to make up an enemy- immigrants, transgenders, commies, Satanic babyeating vampire global elites- to blame your problems on than it is to actually address the root cause of those problems.

But, getting back to the "license to be an asshole" thing- it's important to remember that while totalitarianism places a lot of emphasis on control and law and order, it's anarchy for the people in charge. The law and order is for undesirables- those on the side of the controlling party can do whatever the fuck they want. Nazi officials had Jewish mistresses. In the Stalinist USSR party officials lived like kings while claiming to be on the side of workers, meanwhile the farmers who grew their food were literally starving to death. Totalitarianism is a pretty sweet deal if you're on the side of the people in charge.

Which is strange because my biggest problem with Kamala is she's done nothing to tell me why she should be president other than that Donald Trump should not. But Trump has done the exact same thing with some vague Project 2025 ideas. I want candidates to not be so polarized that they have to actually sell themselves and not "I'm not the other guy."
