This statement is insane. She is at a university. These institutions hire student workers for this exact reason. Most of these jobs will schedule to accommodate classes. Lol no, no one Victoria ever met or socialized with growing up ever started in low-level shelf-stacking work. Not how it works in those circles. Victoria is from generational European wealth and most of them don't even pay token lip service to the ideals of "working your way up" like American elites do. They are raised to implicitly see themselves as quasi-aristocrats from birth.

Normal Americans usually have trouble understanding that kind of cultural background, and for the same reason, Victoria probably has trouble understanding why she comes off as so arrogant and entitled to other Americans (like her college professors).

One I vividly remember is a guy who lives in a motel that is $200+ a day because he needs one with a kitchen and can’t go to a shelter or have roommates because of covid.

I think the low salary implies that they already are in subsidized housing and such due to their disabilities. The pay isn’t supposed to cover a non-disabled person’s living expenses.

These jobs are more about providing a sense of purpose and community (and routines). But disability activists these days seem to think mandatory DoorDash and ass patting on social media provide all the sense of community anyone needs so they hate those jobs.

I did a poor job explaining it, and I conflated sheltered employment with supported employment a bit; sorry.

It's intended to provide supplemental income for people already on SSI who therefore (theoretically) don't "need" more money to support themselves, but who want to work for the sense of community, getting out of the house, sense of accomplishment and purpose, of course extra cash. Some supported employment is transitional, with the hope of the employee getting to the standard level of productivity and standard level of pay. In the meantime, or forever, the lower pay is an incentive for the employer to hire someone for what's essentially part of a job.

Not to be indelicate, but we're talking 'tards here: people with delays or significant mental illness who couldn't complete with unimpaired applicants to a regular job. Victoria is an asshole but she is not intellectually impaired; this is not her program, but she's pretending it's legal to pay poor pitiful her less because she's a cripple and thus it's better for her to beg for money from Dad on social media.
