Speaking of places like NYC, most people really don't realize how much those get in certain circumstances.

For example, if you're a black or brownoid single mother who let some baby daddy pump you without commitment, you actually can get a rent-stabilized apartment in a newly remodeled building and have people actually order the furnishings for it. Most of them are all more or less single issue voters. They're not thinking about the bigger picture and how overall of a ripple effect everything put in place can affect the populace.

This is something not frequently discussed when talking about left/right politics in America.

The parties have been diverging and polarizing since the 1960s, but they built their coalitions differently. The Republicans (specifically under Reagan) centered around big issues, like foreign policy, deregulation, morality, and so on. New Right conservatism was fusionist, tying policies in all areas into a single moral case for exceptional American values. But the Democrats pieced together a coalition of special interests or single-issue voters. This reflects the fragmented path of leftism generally, but also means each faction is extremely devoted to their reason for voting. All you have to do is convince them your party supports their reason.

It's instructive that the party of American values was overtaken by Trumpism, and the party of outright bribes and patronage is still going (though the cracks are showing).
