Civvie 11 - Retro FPS Boomer

I dunno, seems like Civvie genuinely liked the game.
I wouldn't play it, though.
Felt to me like forcing himself. Flipping around it was basically hearing him cycling between minute long rant and "then the game clicked for me" over and over. Including gems like "the developers didn't describe this correctly" or"an enemy appeared and insta killed me".

It's his main source of income, right? I mean, you take these offers, you make these videos, you phone it in, and the wider population of children that power the youtube-adesnse and patreon worlds are too stupid to notice that you farted the video out in an afternoon with some basic tweening.

For full-time content creators, making mostly-boring content is just the norm; so long as now and then you can tell they actually cared about something, I think that's just part and parcel of it being a job. There's certainly some work projects that I'll half-ass and others I'll haul ass over.

At least Nightmare Reaper looks fun to play
The guns are really fun, the level design being blocks of randomly generated tiles and enemy placement get kinda boring after awhile though.

For a civvie review, this one was really low energy. You can tell he's scraping for positive things about it when he mentions boss combat patterns.

I wonder if he was in game development at some point before setting out on his YouTube path? And I love Cancer Mouse. I wish he was in more videos.

He was on the Quad Damage podcast a while back where he went kinda behind-the-scenes with his career. Listening to the others is painful, but I sat through it for Civvie.

He was originally a film student and he wanted to do almost like an AVGN-style show where he'd cut back and forth between gameplay and camera footage, but he shitcanned that idea when he saw how shit and overdone it was.

He originally wanted his character to be based around a tough-guy military wannabe persona with a gruff voice, and you can hear traces of it in his earliest uploaded videos when his recording quality was shit.

There's some pretty interesting stuff if you can sit through the hosts. Even though I don't enjoy video Civvie does, I appreciate his taste in cinema and his extensive knowledge of the histories of older game studios. Some of his best videos are ones where he can go off on a tangent about turmoil in a game's development cycle or a studio's origins. His Doom, Shadow Warrior, Blood, and Duke Nukem episodes are all comfy listening I can come back to.

Call me a boomer or whatever but I don't even watch Civvie's videos about new shooters anymore. He's vids on obscure shit or games he's got fond memories of is where he excels. He's still not Ssshillmwanlives bad but he's getting there slowly but surely.
I try but sometimes I click em off. Sometimes feels forced and to be honest I don't really game haven't in ages so hearing stuff like games I grew up on or saw on a shelf and forgotten about for 20 years is kinda fun.

The last game he did just looked to ugly for me to really groove on. Like was ugly for 1996 but there's no excuse for that under guise of nostalgia.. I get pixel etc but whatever. Was ugly

I don't think this has been posted yet but his Doom TNT playthrough was done entirely on Tiktok, so someone compiled them all together. It's 25 minutes of saying "I SPENT 30 DAYS PLAYING THE MOST BORING DOOM WAD EVER" every minute.
He only did this because fans kept begging for a TNT video after he did plutonia and was very up front about how boring and shit he finds TNT to be.
I actually think its kinda smart for youtubers to do an "exclusive" series like this for tiktok or shorts where its an idea they dont wanna turn into a full video but can turn into a bunch of small videos but the format also means a compilation like this really show how repetitive it is.

Posting now before this idiot covers it and it becomes uncool to like, Echo Point Nova is my GotY. For once a game gives you so many movement options and has enemies that can actually deal with you(the later enemies, at least) instead of having them stare like slackjawed faggots unable to do shit about it.
Making bullets projectiles instead of hitscan makes landing shots while zooming around on the hoverboard so much fun and I especially like all the little tricks you can do to go incredibly fast; bunny hopping and chaining grappling hooks with the proper angles and grenade jumping(it's so much like Tribes, especially the timed Semtex grenade it makes me so happy to do).
Basing your boomer shooter on the very limited design that were Wolfenstein mazes is a bad idea and indie devs should stop doing that, the industry quickly abadoned 90-degree mazes for a reason.
I'm really glad Project Warlock 2 is trying to get away from that but the Early Access reviews are disheartening. Maybe it'll get better but considering the track record of indie FPS and EA you're either GOTYAY from the first demo or you're shit and you'll continue to be shit forever(Graven/Phantom Fury)

Im scared to watch. I hope it's not some not pick or pleb circle jerk. He's proven he's better than both those groups. SOTN is a masterpiece flat out. Its also every ones too list game so a lot of dumb takes why it's good or people finding minor flaws and try to discredit the entire game

If he covers the history good game play little humor it could be great for me a guy who has the OG black disk to learn from and enjoy.

Or it could be a shark jump or view farm. I'll try tomorrow at work.

He does pretty well with it, but as always the LARP moments feel quite out of place.

But yeah, he loves the game.

Really enjoyed the video. As already stated, you can tell he likes the game and knows it well enough to make references and do weird things and little tricks here and there, how to outright breakit.

Is that really the big thing about him? That when he does a game that he knows well or loves there's a marked difference in quality? I'm not a Civvie doomer like some of you guys and find even his weaker videos perfectly cromulent but difficult to say that there isn't a fair bit of daylight between Yet Another Indie Shooter/New Blood-circlejerk, and something the dude probably grew up with and has played >=dozen times.
