A rescued pet squirrel that sat atop a social media and charity empire has been seized by New York state — with its owner saying it’s slated to be euthanized, according to an Instagram post.

Peanut the Squirrel was taken from his Elmira, NY, home Wednesday by officials from the Department of Environmental Conservation, who served a warrant to Peanut’s guardians after receiving complaints of “unlawfully possessed” animals, according to the post.

“Well internet, you WON,” the caption from account Peanut_The_Squirrel12 reads. “You took one of the most amazing animals away from me because of your selfishness. To the group of people who called DEC, there’s a special place in hell for you.”

A DEC spokesperson confirmed to The Post that officers took away Peanut the Squirrel and a pet raccoon.

The squirrel’s owner, Mark Longo, claimed that he was in “shock” and “disbelief” that DEC was going to allegedly euthanize his pet and friend, according to the social media post.

The DEC said that the animals were seized in coordination with Chemung County Health department “due to the presence of a rabis vector species (raccoon) in the home.”

The state agency did not comment on whether the animals will be euthanized.

Longo took in Peanut seven years ago, when he was just a kit, after seeing its mother get hit by a car, according to social media accounts.

Peanut boasts 532,000 followers on Instagram, more than 423,000 followers on Facebook, and over 2 million views on TikTok.

Longo, a Connecticut native, moved to Elmira in 2023 to start an animal sanctuary named P’Nut’s Freedom Farm, a 501.C.3 approved nonprofit.

“Last year we moved to NY in hopes of starting a NONPROFIT animal rescue in PNUT’s Name. [P’Nuts Freedom Farm] will forever live in PNUT’s memory,” Longo wrote in the post announcing Peanut’s seizure.

“With over 350 rescues, we’ve relied heavily on PNUT and his internet family to father donations to help more animals. I don’t even know how will [sic] continue to fundraise for this nonprofit.”

P’Nut’s Freedom Farm is an organization made up of veterinarians and caregivers who are dedicated to rescuing animals from abusive or dire situations, according to the group’s website.

Following the announcement of Peanut’s capture, Longo posted several phone numbers for the Department of Environmental Conservation onto his feed – asking supporters to call in protest against the government’s actions.

There is also a petition to return Peanut to his rightful home.

This is not the first time the DEC is in public relations hot water over confiscating a beloved pet.

Earlier this year, the department confiscated a 750-pound alligator from a Hamburg, NY, home, which was outfitted with a massive room and pool for the reptile’s comfort.

“Albert” the alligator had lived in his home for 34 years and was raised from a hatchling by guardian Tony Cavallaro, who is now suing the department to regain custody of his longtime friend.

Yup. People who pointlessly kill animals are the types of people who will kill people. Today, it's a squirrel, tomorrow it's your child.
I was watching Dankula's video about Francisco Nguema, a schizo African dictator, yesterday.

One thing that stood out was the lengths he went to trying to prevent people from fleeing the country, including lacing the country's only road with landmines and hiding spike strips in the bushes, because he needed their labor.

The only difference between a schizophrenic African dictator with a sub 100 IQ and the Federal Government is how many layers of bullshit they're hiding behind to appear civilized.

Reminder that the government will do the same thing to you as they did to Peanut the squirrel. Buy guns, stay armed. There is nothing the feds hate more
Sorry xir, but we have to put a bullet through your skull because that's the only way we can test if you have the omega gamma ultra-kill variant of Covid. Why don't you trust the experts?™️

I mean, I wouldn't be surprised if more people in Texas found out about the whale and went whaling with sharp, pointy sticks as they did in the old days.

That bitch is reprehensible for what she did to those two innocent animals and that family.

Power-leveling a bit here, but I took in a dog from an abusive family that beat him with belts and kicked him across the floor. He never acted as a normal dog did - he wouldn't play with toys, he wouldn't play fetch or chase anything. All he wanted to do is just hang out near people who made him feel safe even until he died thirteen years later. I had to get him euthanized while I was at work, due to him having seizures. I was constantly calling to find out when and if it happened. And it took me months to even remotely recover.

I'm not going to lie, I won't do my usual smug grin and make a pun. I feel visceral, unimaginable hate toward that bitch whale and the DEC. Pets that have been with you that long are your family - they grieve with you, they may not understand why you're happy, but they're happy with you, and they're happy just to be around you.

This squirrel was saved by this man, raised by hand, and (I've been watching videos on this) was even released, but refused to leave because it didn't want to abandon the family. The squirrel was always free to leave, it just didn't want to. That's one of those rare times you've formed a bond with an animal that is beyond words. To do what that woman did? And the agents? I know fed-posting is against the rules, so, I'll refrain from it. The pain they've inflicted upon this man and his wife - especially when you see the video where they're announcing it? That man looks broken. I have some ideas on what should be done to rectify this situation, but fuck me, man. No fed-posting.

There should be an easier path to legally designate animals as "wildlife ambassadors" aka wild animals kept essentially as pets because they are unreleasable. It's bad when people keep an alligator in their bathtub or buy wolfdogs and think a 4ft fence will keep them in, but when people save birds or rodents as babies, they aren't really a danger to anyone and often don't want to leave or wouldn't really make it in the wild. Like, you just have to get a vet to sign off on it, and demonstrate a basic knowledge of preventing disease and providing a healthy environment for the animal, and can't sell it for profit.

But in practice I can't see any world where this is carried out logically.

Remember what was done to Wally the first licensed support animal alligator. Someone reported him just to have a trapped take him and either kill him or drop him off in the wild with no instincts in an area filled with other alligators (who do, in fact, eat each other).

Squirrel isn't a particularly offensive one, but if you normalize it, like every feckless thot putting a service vest on a Pomeranian and taking it into the grocery store.
"We shouldn't have nice things because some people are retards."

You're going to have more people trying to keep the ones that are, like Deer with a potential for a brain prion disease hopping species.
You only get prion diseases from eating infected meat and even then usually just the brain. We are talking about pets which, at least in my area, people usually don't eat. I think you should bet exiled into the wild lest anyone catch a "brain prion disease hopping" from you.

Edit so as not to double post:
Dude, you know those "I ❤️ NY" shirts? That are usually done in a 2x2 grid? TNYD would totally fit into that template. Just a white shirt with

This is what grinds my gears. If it was a shitbull they would have kept it contained for 7 days to check if it had rabies instead of immediately euthanising it.

Lagomorphs and small rodents have never transmitted rabies to humans in any way, this is common knowledge about the disease. Next the feds will euthanise sparrows claiming it could have rabies.
Waiting for them to pink juice a bunch of hermit crabs because "They might have rabies."

There is no official Church doctrine as to whether or not there are animals in heaven, so I choose to believe Peanut is hanging out with Jesus right now.
According to my Southern Baptist family, animals go to Heaven and your pets are all waiting for you there. That's official enough for me.
