He may have only married Greta after his work visa expired, so it would have been a sticky situation requiring diligent paperwork and probably a six month trip back to India to do it right. Nina probably thought I'll just get married and it will be okay - wrong. Once you go out of status getting married doesn't magically make it better. You can fuck up immigration status any number of ways, it's not hard, it's a complex process that you should have a lawyer help you navigate. Given the behavior of these two I think they just thought the rules wouldn't apply to them and yes, were just fucking lazy.

ETA: Once Nino left Google he lost his visa. You usually have 30 days to leave the country once you leave the employment of your work sponsor. It's expensive shit for a company to pay for and they won't keep around dead weight. I don't know how or when Nina left google, but it sounds like he just decided to troon it up after leaving and that was a very bad plan.

Sanctuary cities are just places which limit their co-operation with federal agencies on immigration violations. It doesn't affect ICE's authority at all.
