UK British News Megathread - aka CWCissey's news thread

https://news.sky.com/story/row-over-new-greggs-vegan-sausage-rolls-heats-up-11597679

A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

I'd like to know what Starmer was thinking when he appointed David Lammy foreign secretary. I get that he needed to appoint a black to one of the great offices of state, but the idea that the only choice wad Lammy is kind of shocking to me.

The first time Lammy says or does something to piss off another country, all the dumb shit he's said and done will be dug up (kind of surprised Israeli media hasn't bothered yet). Though I wonder if the reason he's being so obequious with Trump and Vance even before they won the election is because he knows this.

Tony Blair wrote in his auto biography that no politician once in the job ever wants to stop being foreign secretary. You get all the prestige of moving on the world stage but none of the hassles of dealing with domestic politics (this was actually a subtle dig at Robin Cook). If Starmer ever tries to sack Lammy he's not going to go quitely. Also because of the state of the FCO I don't think his civil servants have the qualities to tard wrangle him.

Anyway this is always worth a watch.

The IRL commentary I've heard is all some level of disinterest and all variations on the theme of "they deserve whatever happens next".

Personally I honestly couldn't give a shit. Doesn't affect me.
Typical Nat. You’ll be in your knees with your tongue out and your arse cheeks spread and willing as soon as there’s a sniff of cash available from him.

Bongfrens, I am curious about reactions to Trump’s election from people IRL in the UK. Please share any interesting anecdotes you have.
I work in a pretty left-wing industry so the usual shock, horror, etc., though I’ve been off sick today so I haven’t been able to gauge most people’s reactions in person. Interestingly enough, there seems to be a lot less performative weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth on my social media feeds, but maybe that’ll come tomorrow.

I had an encounter with a woman who seemed very upset where I work. I've seen her around but have said about 10 words to her. I asked her if she was ok as she was nearly in tears. She said it was the worst day of her life, I assumed someone had died or something. Then she blurted out "It's only 4 years." Which confused me for a moment and she followed up with muttering about "him screwing with term limits". Realised what she was going on about and replied that I hope she had a better day and made myself scarce. She had a slightly American accent but I couldn't place it. I'm sure it won't be the last encounter I have with someone ranting about Trump.

I'm so bloody old now I have to keep those bullshit 'decorative pillows' in the house so I can put them under my battered old knees as required. God, where did my excitable youth go? Can't even have sex without fucking cushioning. Middle age is fucking bullshit

My bongfren, mentioned how all the lefties in his work where very pale and faces where tripping as they went into the all gender bathrooms. They had a massive TV in work so they could see the results coming in.

Also I want Trump to buck break, Keir. That stunt with Labour coming over here and trying to get people to vote for Kamala should be called out publicly, especially if Keir was one of those people that claimed Trump won 2016 due to 'Russian interference'.

It's incredible to see how easily people can be whipped up into a frenzy. I've spent so long thinking this was something that only happened in uneducated countries, or in history, but it's obvious now that we're all only steps away from collective hysteria.

You'd like to think it couldn't happen to you, but seeing how easily it seems to happen to others makes you wonder.

Not uneducated countries. Just uneducated, weak willed people.

Do you not remember the mourning after Princess Diana ? People bawling like they knew her. I wouldn't wish anyone dead and I was in no way pleased it happened, but to display that level of emotion over someone you don't know personally.....I can't empathise with that. To me that was just because one overly emotional person started crying the next person felt compelled and then the next......it spread like the hysterical screaming of Beatle mania.

This is the same thing with Trumper, one Libertard over-reacts to this "cataclysmic" news and so the next one feels compelled to and on it goes. Probably some peer pressure mixed in too if it's an office full of them. They feel the eyes on them and worry they won't be one of the gang if they don't react the same. I would imagine some are just going along with the "2 minutes of hate", but are really Winston Smiths.

This lesson was obvious back when covid was doing the rounds. Really made me realize how things like the gestapo got as bad as they did and how easily your neighbours (if they weren't close) would snitch on you for good girl/boy points.

This is a lot of words just to say you think you'd never fall victim to it.

2015 and on has been an endless parade of black pills. Covid especially made it clear how many of us don't have a fundamental philosophy guiding our beliefs, but instead just jump from opinion to opinion with no connection between.

It's all absolutely hilarious. While it has no direct bearing on me, I have absolutely loved seeing the salt flow.

I'm also enjoying calling out people IRL, asking why they care so much when the UK is a total state. Not one of them has yet to give me a credible answer but they've all got very upset and angry when asked.

It’s easier for them to blame Trump for their problems than the party the voted into power who literally set the country on fire the first few weeks when they were in charge.

I didn’t realise he was such a twat, good to know!
It's true, I was expecting at least a token rant in the client slack today, but not a thing. I think they're still trying to process it.
My work is crickets. Utter silence. Socials, silent. It’s like they’re still all hungover and crying somewhere. Disappointed tbh. I shall be cheeriness and light today. It’s a LOVELY day isn’t it? Is it nice where you are? It’s lovely here, crisp, autumn setting in, really lovely. Felt just nice this morning you know? I am going to really rub it in, in a way that’s unimpeachable. What? Election? Oh well I’m this side of the pond not really been following it you know. Are you ok? Who won? Oh really, well he was good last time so that’s great isn’t it? No..? Oh gosh are you ok?
Apparently Trump might veto our surrender of the Chagos islands (the Yanks have a base there too). That'd be good news if so.
Hang on… how about we keep the chagos islands and send starmer there as governor? Maybe not governor, that’s a bit much… they must have some latrines that need cleaning though.
I want trump to put them all firmly in their places.
And on that note - what are the likely impacts on the Uk and Europe as whole? This DOES affect us, when America sneezes we catch a cold. The woke bollocks went into overdrive here when Biden was elected, what America does affects us a lot.

I do a job which is ancilliary to engineering (that's what company itself does, but I am not an engineer). I work nights and one of my secondary roles (tertiary if it's a slow night) is recording breakdowns of our kit. I couldn't tell you anything about my employers politics as it's simply not discussed or encouraged to discuss at work, but some of our customers, a lot of whom work in, among others, ligistics and distribution, were really chipper last night. One regular who I speak to a fair bit sounded really perky, I asked how he was and he went off on one about how "the tide is turning" and he might have started 4 on of 12 hour night shifts, and it's 3 weeks til payday, and nearly Christmas, so peak time of year for him, but that nothing could ruin his mood "today" (as in, this mornig at silly AM when we spoke).

It's been genuinely heartening to hear and absolutely what I've needed. Khan fucking the hell off would be the cherry atop my sundae just now.

I suspect complicated.

Ostensibly Trump wants to clean house but the rot of American influence spreads far. I doubt anything he does will massively improve things for us. That said he might drag a few things to light that will humiliate NGOs operating here too.

I hope he can be a positive influence. I was quite surprised by how quickly and how negatively the Biden presidency influenced our politics - the cultural onslaught happened rapidly. America has much more influence on Europe than I think many realise. If trump can sort out Russia/ukraine and get even things like energy policy back to what they were life will be better.
-gut all net zero stuff
-expose NGOs
-immigration
-energy policy and de industrialisation needs to be reversed. That was a direct line from America, I will not believe otherwise.
