/horror/ general megathread - Let's talk about movies and shit.

I watched Shock Waves back when, not expecting much but approaching it with an open mind, and really is atmospheric and almost hallucinatory at times, a disqueting mood, a very effective chiller. I do like the somewhat novel take on the "zombie". Though ideas are no good if the execution is bungled, so it helps that the Death Korps are rather effectively portrayed, the zombies as ruthless, cold killing machines. I mean, they're "just" guys in uniforms wearing goggles, but they are so dang silent, it's a touch unnerving. I admit was intrigued by the shot of them emerging from the water, as seen on the back of the old VHS boxes.

yeah, once you get past "it's not a janky italian splat movie" it's a pretty good spooky movie
the only real problem it has is that when you hear "randos land on an island and get attacked by Peter Cushing's Nazi Zombie Army" you get expectations of some REALLY crazy Ita/SP shit instead of "a pretty good spooky movie"

And Peter Cushing plays the head Nazi zombie.

Quatermass And The Tits
The last half an hour of Quatermass and the Pit is so good. London falling apart as people start slaughtering each other. There's something about a riot in a movie or a videogame (there's a mission in the Warriors that I played over and over again) that tickles me.

Hammer was great. Next to Ealing, they were the best production company in England.

Haven't seen this mentioned anywhere but this show is about a nigger and a jew investigating hate crimes from the looks of it, genuinely thought I was watching parody material but it's actually really wtf it's from FX and its a show called Grotesquerie. Still watching it now and it feels like I'm watching a parody.

Arguably, Boll has made a couple of good films. There's Darfur and Tunnel Rats which have fans but didn't do much for me. Then there's Rampage -which I fucking love- and Assault on Wall Street and of course Postal. Boll is working on a Postal sequel right now.
Rampage and postal were both pretty solid. The main character in Rampage is also in Freddy vs Jason and is the main character in Goosebumps Warewolf of fever swamp (as a kid).

So I got a chance to watch V/H/S Beyond and it is somehow even more dogshit than the previous lowpoint of Viral. Almost none of the segments actually followed the mechanical conventions of the supposed premise, the wrap-around segment was about Reddit posts and had the Corridor Crew cameo in it, and the theme of 'aliens' was not only lame, but not integrated into the segments.

I don't feel like going into details about each segment unprompted, and I'm not going to spoil anything about this shitshow. As I said, a big issue is that every segment has too many cameras that are way unnecessary, leading to a lot of jump cuts and lazy editing that seems schizoid. Additionally, in at least two segments the camera recording everything is sucked into a spacecraft and taken out of the galaxy, which begs the question of how did we get the fucking footage. Another big issue is the total lack of restraint or confidence in all the segments - every one of them showed too much of their (shitty) special effects/monsters, making them more of a joke than frightening, or they over-egged the pudding by going way past what they needed. Just about every segment felt really clumsy and artless, very amateur. The third issue was overall bad writing/direction, in most segments it was impossible to determine what was happening, why, who was doing it, and why we should care. Even segments with what should have been simple concepts were often overwrought, and one of them was just plain nonsensical.

The theme being 'aliens' was frustrating, because they've had several segments based on this theme that were done well, like Total Copy and Teenage Slumber Party Abduction. That they couldn't have some good ideas again and learn from their prior success is disappointing, and worse yet not even every segment went with the theme, so what was the point? It feels like every decision they made for this one was bad, starting from the jump.
