There will be a fair few democrats who have taken one look at the state of democrat internal politics, and realised that things are going to get worse before they get better.

RFK went from a democrat to a republican cabinet member in the span of one campaign. There is value to be gained in being the one who proves to be amenable, especially moderate democrats in swing or near-swing states.

Because their ideology is a seamless garment. In the seamless garment, its all or nothing. And the fear is if one starts to pull on a loose string, they whole garment falls apart.

So they are not allowed to admit to errors, inconsistencies or ever admit to being wrong. They base their legitimacy and world view on being superior, and if they are wrong about something then that challenges that world view. Basically it comes down to "I think, therefore it is".
