Illinois does have a somewhat anemic version of castle doctrine, although I don't think they call it that. You're generally allowed to defend yourself using force, especially in your own home. Outside the home, there is no "stand your ground" and it's a duty to retreat state. Defending yourself generally requires the force to be reasonable, though, and you have to be defending yourself against an actual threat. So for instance someone trying to force his way into your home would be reasonable grounds to think you were threatened and entitle you to defend yourself.

Someone knocking on your door does not justify macing and knocking someone over, especially if you never even just politely asked them to leave. If the cops decide to make anything of this, he's fucked.

It's still idiotic to go to someone's house to basically harass them, even if this legally probably was not harassment. She had no legitimate business there, which might mitigate the issue somewhat.
