Yeah, that's exactly my experience too, I've seen it happen to a few and it's just a specific energy. It's more than just someone ruining their life over addiction and lashing out. There's a different "darkness" edge to it.
I don't think he was directly dabbling in the occult at that time, but I absolutely believe that those were signs that he was a perfect candidate for it. It was basically "God is a sinner, therefore I, a sinner, can be god." - perhaps not fully formed yet, but growing. Yeah, you are right, something was already there.
