The DoE is a total failure. American schools produce graduates who cannot read, write, think, do basic math, or function in society. Why would you keep such a system in place when you could just replace it with something created from the lessons learned?

Oh right because it is an indoctrination and troonification mill.

Are they planning on selling themselves back to Russia or something?
John Wayne Howe is a member of the AIP, the Alaska Independence Party, whose stated goal since its inception in 1984 (they existed unofficially prior to that) is to attempt to get Alaska to either become a wholly separate nation or to otherwise divest themselves from the remaining United States on the grounds that Alaska is too far away from the Lower 48 to effectively be governed, and thus they are not represented.

The stated goal of divestment won't work for a number of reasons I don't feel like going into here, so in practice they represent the spirit of Alaskan independence. They make some gains sometimes in local elections, but never enough to threaten anything or really matter. They're almost more of a social club than anything and the hardcore AIP members are in it for the love of the game these days.

They're a fine group of folks, if a little misguided.

tbf most people who dislike the DoE probably couldn't give anything resembling figures either, myself included
They are the layer of scum on top of the polluted pond of our educational system.

They have no direct control but they do provide guidance and have control over funding.

They also have their fingers in the financial aid pie.

The federal department only funds college stuff, DEI, and "special education" that doesn't result in more speds becoming productive or taxpaying citizens. We'd be better off just giving them babysitters and planning for their ongoing care. Not one of the sped programs shows long-term measurable positive impacts.

Oh yeah, and they fund a bunch of preschool shit that works less well than just not going at all. Bravo, feds. Such a great job.

Fed spending is about 10% of a typical school district's funding, and the district typically has to waste a ton of money, time, and effort writing for grant funding and squeezing their programs into the shape required by the potential grant.

I remembered this meme today, it expresses how I've felt since the election results.

Watching basically the worst people in hysterics about all this gives me a warm feeling inside. I'm not even American and I have a strange sense of optimism about the future.
Whatever schadenfreude there is from those hysterics has worn off, but the optimism is still there. The future looks brighter, more open. Since I can actually see options now, I'm much more motivated than in three, four years ago.

Milei dismantled almost all of the goverments deparments and not only did inflation slow down by like 10 times what it used to be the goverment is also running better than ever and schools are running without issue.
Goverment departments are nothing more than politician nepo-babies repositories where they go to do nothing and get paid a 6 figure salary

Control over state/local funding is 100% direct control over everything else.
Most funding comes from property taxes and other local funding.

The real problem with the Dept of Ed is that there is an entire division, The Office of Elementary and Secondary Education, that does....what? Supposedly it enforces protections and helps ensure academic excellence. Not sure if you actually heard or felt my eyes roll there but I have a feeling the DoEd exerts far more pressure on lower level schools than they would freely admit.

Most states still depend on DoE funding to pad their education budgets. Eliminating it is great but only if Trump can find a way to get the $68 billion budget back to the states.
