I spent an inordinate amount of time the other day trying to explain to a friend of mine, a dentist, how tariffs actually function. She had no comprehension of market protectionism or anything like that and got completely stuck on the "China wont pay those tariffs" part instead going into loops about how they would just avoid it so they wouldn't care.

It's hard bro. You can even show someone foreign products that already have tariffs and they just get this deer in the headlights look.

What’s their explanation for China’s economy growing from nothing to the world’s manufacturer in only around 20 years because the CCP blocked all foreign competition?

On top of their tariffs, the EU is a huge fan of non-tariff trade barriers like designated origin laws, hyper-specific “safety” regulations that make foreign products illegal (common for things like food and cars), impossible to comply with “privacy” laws that are exclusively enforced against foreign tech companies, etc.

Their complaints about Trump’s tariffs are just them whining that they’re not going to be able to sell into the US while locking American companies out of their market anymore.

You don't vote Democrat because of what they'll do about taxes, wars, spending, the economy, or anything else, really. Their version of protectionism is stupid because it can't generate any revenue. Tariffs are actually fine, in moderation. You would only want to execute free trade when the other party is slavishly loyal and the both sides benefit is clear, obvious and immediate.

Like Vietnam is slavishly loyal, but it's not clear our economy gets any benefit out of it, other than the multinationals will leave the clutches of Beijing and relocate to Da Nang where the Vietname government doesn't hate us, but I don't think we benefit economically. However with Mexico, we can get a savings by not using ocean transport since there are existing road and rail networks, so a product can get into our market in hours instead of 3-9 weeks with Asia. But there's no government apparatus in Mexico for checking labor unions, so if you're one of "those" employers who does the extra to demoralize the help, you'll get wildcat strikes and nobody from Mexico City will help you.
