Wage slaves try to cut their living expenses and save a bit of their income and put it in ETFs or stocks so they can gain a bit of interest on it. They think about putting a few hundred bucks a month into some savings account and pray for high interest. They look at their trading app and pray for the line to go up. Anything that happens is outside their control.

Small entrepreneurs take up bank loans or use their life savings or inheritance to start a business. They pay wages, material, equipment from their savings and need to turn a profit soon. If they fail, they lost their life savings. If their company becomes unprofitable, they have to continue working for below minimum wage. If anything fails, the only thing they can do is work harder and harder. A failure of their company can cause bankruptcy for them as a person. They are only one recession or act of IRS pettiness away from picking up a rope. YOU THINK ABOUT BEING HERE.
Angel investors have money they don’t need and had to pay insane taxes on it they didn’t spend it, so they put in tickets with 100 startups („invest in them“). They have the resources and connections to help these startups. Some of them will put a lot of work in as well. They expect most of them to fail. If even 10 of them make it, that’s an amazing quota, and they can easily x100 or even x1,000 of what they put in out of a single unicorn. The ones that fail, the angel investors pick clean the carrion and divert resources to the still running investments.

Venture backed founders start businesses. They have a clear business case, they know what they want to do and how to do it. They have a lot of know-how and connections. They iterate over the cycle of „developing the product/company“ and „securing more funding from investors“. While they do all that, they are paid very handsome wages by the business they founded - no matter if it turns a profit or not. They have to justify their decisions to their investors.
When the startup fails to prosper and investors turn off the money faucet, the company will declare bankruptcy- often at the behest of the investors. Sometimes it even makes sense to deliberately let the company declare bankruptcy and start a new one, e.g. when the company has a lot of outstanding debt, there are no tangible values like patents or trademarks in the company, but the work has shown there are better opportunities elsewhere and intangible values like connections, market research, product strategy opportunities etc can be transferred over to something different.
This is not shady, but it’s pretty much standard. A company is meant to do a certain thing, and if that does not work out, it does not make sense to carry that baggage over to something different.
Yes, most startups fail. It’s the startups that fail, not the founders. If I, as a venture backed founder, have my startup fail after two years, that can be heartbreaking, no matter why. But it also means I was able to pay myself a solid five digit monthly wage for 24 months.
That’s the fucking difference between your (hypothetical) idiot cousin‘s failed car detailing shop and my failed tech startup. Your cousin wasted his inheritance and now the bank kicked him out of his house. I financed my company with investor money, and paid off my house in under two years. Just from the money my company paid me, without turning a profit. Now I am taking the knowhow and connections into my next startup - which will be investor founded as well, with some of the same investors returning, because none of this was shady.
Your cousin declared bankruptcy. One of my companies declared bankruptcy. Your cousin is fucked. I am doing great. Do you see the difference?

I spent an inordinate amount of time the other day trying to explain to a friend of mine, a dentist, how tariffs actually function. She had no comprehension of market protectionism or anything like that and got completely stuck on the "China wont pay those tariffs" part instead going into loops about how they would just avoid it so they wouldn't care.
It's hard bro. You can even show someone foreign products that already have tariffs and they just get this deer in the headlights look.

this is why even when I was an atheist I never identified with it as some sort of identity. I feel justified in this seeing how many big name atheists ended up being total losers and degenerates. Most of the EU nations and all of the Asian ones have the some most protectionist domestic market policies in the world. They all but outlaw foreign competition. But if the US does it for their own market its somehow racist and unthinkable. It's so exhausting.
Then you risk DeSantis appointing him to Rubio's Senate position if they refuse to make him attorney general but accept his resignation from the House.
