You're right that he sheds his previous identities like a skin when he's done with them. Convinced of his true and honest womanhood, he screeched at his parents until they cut him off, taking solace with his tranny sisters online (and possibly in-person). But once he had Frank paypigging his surgeries, he flipped them the bird now that he had finally made it as a woman in his eyes and didn't refer to himself as a tranny again for over a decade. He loved the action girl persona he had cultivated for himself, with pretty much his entire online persona after that dedicated to very male-oriented pursuits like gaming, racing, and tech. And then after so many ups and downs along the way, he finally admitted to being a tranny when he realized that nobody was paying attention to his grift anymore, but he obviously feels no shame in speaking on behalf of women for years now, nor in raising a bunch of money on that false pretense.

The upside of all this is that John inevitably makes everyone hate him due to his aforementioned duplicity and stupidity. Give it time and this schtick will fall apart just like the old ones, and he'll have to find some new way to grift.
