Going to get started on my new year's resolution early this year and be nice in response I guess, but I'm a Libertarian. I voted for Trump for the same reason a lot of other people did, because the government has ceased by all metrics giving a shit about the citizenry it is supposed to serve. Trump, whatever you think of him, represented and still does a shakeup of the establishment.

I don't mean to be condescending when I say this and if it comes off this way please understand that it does seem that a lot of folks who don't 'get it' misinterpret what 'the swamp' or 'the establishment' is, so I'll define it: it means moneyed interests that don't align with the interests of the people, that have been influencing our government for longer than most people on this website have been alive, and will continue to do so. The MIC being one, for instance, lobbying to start wars and funding think tanks that give credentials to the asinine plans the neocons in Washington draw up like the New American Century project. Big pharma and telecom companies would be another couple of examples. The opposing examples like Elon Musk or even, I guess, Trump, while I dread to make the comparison for reason I hope are mutually obvious not the least of which reasons is the difference in profession, but Henry Ford is an ur-example of a rich man 'of the people'.

Now on the inverse, if you can't see the writing on the wall and compare it to the history lessons learned in the 20th century of what the beginnings of a brutal totalitarian oligarchy look like, it was obvious that nothing good awaited a Kamala 'victory'. I'm at a stage in my life where I feel I'm done arguing over petty, what I consider to be objectively inarguable details of reality like this, or the fact that a man in a dress is still a man, so if you disagree with my assessment please know I don't view my position on it as an opinion and will accordingly not shift on it.

They did reverse engineer the BMW 003 engine and used them on the MiG 9, but German jet engines were a notoriously unreliable design. The time between overhauls was something like 40 hours and it needed to be babied or it would flame out in flight, so they purchased a Rolls-Royce engine and license to manufacture them for the MiG 15.

I find that both sides of the political aisle claim that they represent the people, the voice of unheard, silent majority, whatever you call it. Yet, the majority of American do not vote, and the voting public is thinly divided, as seen in the House having slim majorities.

There’s also the fact that the American people are fickle and complex. Let’s say a man voted for Obama in 2012 because he wanted to protect the Affordable Care Act due to his preexisting conditions, but voted for Trump in 2016 due to concerns about international trade imbalance. He still wants to protect the ACA, so was Trump going against that man’s interests by wanting to overturn the ACA?

What about the parts of the government that are important, but that the American public do not pay attention to because it does not affect their daily lives? International foreign aid to a country like Kazakstan serves as a bulwark against similar influence that China and Russia exerts on the country. A local community in a distant US state may benefit from a research or arts grant that some would view as wasteful spending. Whose interests matter in that instance?

My point is that I am skeptical of claims that one side represents the people (not calling you out, @LurkTrawl just using your post as means to discuss the issue) because the American people have vast, varied, and often conflicting interests.
