There are many people ive known personally that pulled themselves together after similar upbringings but it is never easy.

If they have healthy role models to show them what normal people behave like, and I believe these kids do, there's a much higher chance that they'll loathe their parents and rebel by being straight edge. These aren't kids growing up in a trailer park where the meth head lifestyle is all they've known. These kids are the exception among their extended family and community and they're going to resent it. It's like the difference between regular people who happen to be poor, and ghetto people.
