An unreleased episode of Marvel animated series Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur won’t air on Disney Channel over its politically sensitive LGBTQ themes, people who worked on the show say. The episode is about the recurring character Brooklyn, a trans classmate of Lunella Lafayette (aka Moon Girl), competing in a girl’s volleyball game and a “a narrow-minded coach” who tries to have Brooklyn barred from playing.

Early in the episode, “The Gatekeeper,” Brooklyn recalls her time spent playing soccer and “the darkness of me having to play on the boys team.” Brooklyn’s comments about her athletic past are overheard by the opposing team’s coach, Greer (played by Amy Sedaris), who tries to have the teenager disqualified from the game. But Brooklyn’s coach, gym teacher Coach Hrbek, tells Greer, “Brooklyn IS a girl, and she’s gonna play.” The episode then veers into supervillain territory, as Greer uses a magical key to confine Brooklyn, her teammates, and watergirl Lunella in the girl’s locker room.

Brooklyn, who is voiced by actor Indya Moore, identifies as trans to her peers in the episode. “I’m trans, my very existence breaks Greer’s rules,” she tells her teammates before breaking down into tears. Brooklyn’s trans identity is further communicated through imagery; Brooklyn wears Pride-themed kneepads and has a “Trans is beautiful” sticker on her water bottle. The episode’s color palette is saturated in hues from the transgender flag. Its themes of prejudice, exclusion, and finding support through progressive allies is unmissable.

Artists who worked on Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur took to social media this week to lament that the episode had been “shelved because of which party that won the recent election,” likely referring to Donald Trump winning the presidency and Republicans garnering a majority in the U.S. House and Senate. Conservative politicians have campaigned to ban trans and non-binary student athletes competing in girl’s and women’s athletics in recent years.

According to a source at Disney, the decision to hold the episode of Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur was made more than a year ago and was not based the result of recent U.S. elections. That source said that “in this case, this decision was based on this specific episode, not because of the character being trans.” They said the episode is not specifically “banned” from airing, but being “held.” It’s unclear if the episode will ever see an official release.

The source said that Disney is “really proud” of Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, noting that its target age range is kids age 6-12 and that the company is “respectful of the role that parents play in the discussions they have with their children.”

“The Gatekeeper” was one of a handful of episodes still to be aired as part of Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur season 2. While the animated series was canceled earlier this year, Disney and Marvel still had about 10 episodes in the tank. And though “The Gatekeeper” may never officially air, on Friday, the full, completed episode was uploaded to YouTube, unofficially.

Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur debuted on Disney Channel in February 2023. The show, which also streams on Disney Plus, follows the adventures of 13-year-old prodigy Lunella Lafayette and her T. rex sidekick, Devil Dinosaur. After Lunella accidentally brings Devil Dinosaur into present-day New York City, the duo works together to protect the her neighborhood from danger, amid other hijinks. The show features the voices of Diamond White as Lunella, Fred Tatasciore as Devil Dinosaur, Alfre Woodard as Lunella’s grandmother Mimi, and Laurence Fishburne as The Beyonder.

Update (4:30 p.m. EST): This story has been updated with information from a source at Disney.

Correction: A previous version of this story indicated that Brooklyn does not explicitly identify as trans in the episode. She does, and this story has been updated to note that.

Damn they aren't even being subtle about this indoctrination propaganda.
Tried to watch the whole thing. Every minute of it felt so painful that death itself would be preferable. Some things of interest that I noticed are:
  1. There is a "non-binary" character that just sounds and looks like a chinese twink. I'm guessing its voiced by a TIF, but the voice sounds more twink-esque than froggy.
  2. Any time that the stunning and brave transwomxn has to talk at a volume above a mutter, xir voice no longer passes. This is especially apparent in the scene when xe starts crying about how xe as a troon is a burden.
  3. The good guys are all some sort of a minority, while the bad guys are mostly white.
  4. They use the escape room as a metaphor for the system, and the only way to win it is to break it because the transwomxns existence is against the system. They don't even try to be clever about it, as they pretty much said that directly.
  5. The main villain is supposed to be a TERF that wants to enforce a fair game by preventing the athlete from competing herself. Honestly pretty based:story:
  6. The transwomxn escapes the room when all of the real women support xir and defeat le evol terf.

"Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur"

Literally what even is this?
Z-grade IP as envisioned by Z-grade storyboardists and Z-grade CalArts Beanmouthers

(the fact that sentence makes sense is a stunning indictment of Current Year)

Yeah Disney had this be a thing a while ago that they wanted to move away from shoving gays down people’s throats. This episode especially is so political it’s insane, given how heavily trannies affected the election.

It's telling the only animation of late that people liked and did okay at the box office was Inside Out 2, and only then because the Mouse gave strict orders that if they made Riley even one little bit gay they'd all be fired. Funny how that works.

So was this an episode about a 1 off trans character or an existing character revealed as trans, or is it that this character is always specifically trans?

Because if so, pulling one episode hardly matters if they have a trans character on a show every episode...

No kidding it hardly matters:

While the animated series was canceled earlier this year

Sounds like this was a last grab at relevance through "representation" for a bunch of animation department personnel that are about to go unemployed in a sea of also-unemployed woke artists that got let go earlier in the year.

If your attempt to get noticed was "remember the trans episode?!" it was kinda useless when EVERYONE is doing one.

Do you think Disney will ever just hire artists that aren't completely leftoid brain? I want to hope that they'll abandon this money-wasting business approach and just make shit that's Disney again.

It's one thing to have a liberal artist but every single artist that works in the Disney sphere is the most leftist leftoid on the planet. Palestine flags everywhere, pronouns, 'diverse' characters that look like racist stereotypes, Bluesky.. it's so cliche now...

This trash just isn't sustainable. It loses money, inspires no-one and causes division for the sake of ego stroking.
And beyond the plain ol' cringe... all this shit is just bland ontop of ugly.

It's as if these shows are made exclusively for the adults that work in the cartoon industry. Because who the fuck else watches this shit other than the weirdos making it and their colleagues-- all who want to prove to the rest of the hivemind in the industry that they are "progressive".

I know a lot of people are getting fired in the animation industry in general-- which brings hope there will be at least some sort of change.

Technology is such that you don't even need a studio to produce a good quality cartoon, nor the backing of a major network to release it.... the whole "traditional" industry is shriveling up before us as those with actual talent and love of the medium are abandoning the old heads who've gone hopelessly woke.

This was probably going to happen eventually , just like the newspapers going extinct, but, the decision to be hyper-political with hard-left ideals certainly sped the end up by at least a decade.

the same nigger garbage that every single show is in current day. TV is basically unwatchable now

It's actually impressive that there's literally zero white characters (their coach is borderline but likely intended to be Hispanic)

Except for two characters in a wide shot... and of course, the villain's team
