An unreleased episode of Marvel animated series Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur won’t air on Disney Channel over its politically sensitive LGBTQ themes, people who worked on the show say. The episode is about the recurring character Brooklyn, a trans classmate of Lunella Lafayette (aka Moon Girl), competing in a girl’s volleyball game and a “a narrow-minded coach” who tries to have Brooklyn barred from playing.

Early in the episode, “The Gatekeeper,” Brooklyn recalls her time spent playing soccer and “the darkness of me having to play on the boys team.” Brooklyn’s comments about her athletic past are overheard by the opposing team’s coach, Greer (played by Amy Sedaris), who tries to have the teenager disqualified from the game. But Brooklyn’s coach, gym teacher Coach Hrbek, tells Greer, “Brooklyn IS a girl, and she’s gonna play.” The episode then veers into supervillain territory, as Greer uses a magical key to confine Brooklyn, her teammates, and watergirl Lunella in the girl’s locker room.

Brooklyn, who is voiced by actor Indya Moore, identifies as trans to her peers in the episode. “I’m trans, my very existence breaks Greer’s rules,” she tells her teammates before breaking down into tears. Brooklyn’s trans identity is further communicated through imagery; Brooklyn wears Pride-themed kneepads and has a “Trans is beautiful” sticker on her water bottle. The episode’s color palette is saturated in hues from the transgender flag. Its themes of prejudice, exclusion, and finding support through progressive allies is unmissable.

Artists who worked on Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur took to social media this week to lament that the episode had been “shelved because of which party that won the recent election,” likely referring to Donald Trump winning the presidency and Republicans garnering a majority in the U.S. House and Senate. Conservative politicians have campaigned to ban trans and non-binary student athletes competing in girl’s and women’s athletics in recent years.

According to a source at Disney, the decision to hold the episode of Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur was made more than a year ago and was not based the result of recent U.S. elections. That source said that “in this case, this decision was based on this specific episode, not because of the character being trans.” They said the episode is not specifically “banned” from airing, but being “held.” It’s unclear if the episode will ever see an official release.

The source said that Disney is “really proud” of Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, noting that its target age range is kids age 6-12 and that the company is “respectful of the role that parents play in the discussions they have with their children.”

“The Gatekeeper” was one of a handful of episodes still to be aired as part of Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur season 2. While the animated series was canceled earlier this year, Disney and Marvel still had about 10 episodes in the tank. And though “The Gatekeeper” may never officially air, on Friday, the full, completed episode was uploaded to YouTube, unofficially.

Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur debuted on Disney Channel in February 2023. The show, which also streams on Disney Plus, follows the adventures of 13-year-old prodigy Lunella Lafayette and her T. rex sidekick, Devil Dinosaur. After Lunella accidentally brings Devil Dinosaur into present-day New York City, the duo works together to protect the her neighborhood from danger, amid other hijinks. The show features the voices of Diamond White as Lunella, Fred Tatasciore as Devil Dinosaur, Alfre Woodard as Lunella’s grandmother Mimi, and Laurence Fishburne as The Beyonder.

Update (4:30 p.m. EST): This story has been updated with information from a source at Disney.

Correction: A previous version of this story indicated that Brooklyn does not explicitly identify as trans in the episode. She does, and this story has been updated to note that.

It's a perversion of an old Jack Kirby comic Devil Dinosaur, which was about a red T-Rex and a neanderthal boy called "Moon Boy", who had adventures in the prehistoric era.

It was originally a stand alone book but got incorporated into the greater Marvel Universe in the 1987 New Mutants spin off Fallen Angels.

Moon Boy was killed off off-panel in Next wave (a book who's standing in Marvel canon is in flux depending on the writer) and during the dark work days of the late 2010, the book was rebooted as "Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur", where Devil Dinosaur was paired with a smarmy black girl who in her first appearance was declared he smartest person in the Marvel Universe, even smarter than tokens Val Richards (blonde girl) and Amadeus Cho (Asian super genius).

Her books sold for shit but Marvel kept her around via a deal with Scholastics, where they sold the first trade paperback for years.
Oh yeah, now I remember... the girl who gave a talk at Sotomayor University in America #2

Oh no who will all the trans athletes look up to now? Any boy should be able to knock out any transphobes who don’t immediately recognize that they’re just trying to live their lives. I hope all their teeth get knocked out by a hyper aggressive hormonal imbalanced trans athlete.

On another note… Why did Harris lose? How could the American people reject the party of love and peace? I don’t get it.

I just find it amusing that Leftists truly believe non-Whites are cool with fags and troons, and it's just the huWhite people who are homophobes and transphobes.

Sure, Jan. Try throwing a pride march in deepest darkest Africa or the Islamic Caliphate and let us bigoted huWhite people know how you get on..
No need to go that far, they could try to do a pride march at the Muslims communities of Dearborn and Hamtramck. :story:

They'd find it very hard to inform us of their "success" after they're unceremoniously tossed off a rooftop.
With Africa the left are basically using economic terrorism/extortion to force them to submit to Globo Homo while in the Middle East, they want to enthrone liberal friendly tyrants and/or military dictatorships who will force Globo Homo down peoples throats (though ironically enough, in some Fundie Muslim countries, transgenderism is more accepted than homosexuality since eunuch culture is strong in those countries with hardcore Fundies)

Yeah I've heard that Iran forcibly troons you out if you're found guilty of being gay.

Lol what?

The friendly tyrants give ZERO shits about the people

Suffah, Disney. Suffah.

I'm not surprised at all that Disney allowed an episode like this to be produced ever since that zoom meeting on DEI stuff occurred, but I am surprised they're not "officially" airing it. Lost time and money on stupid bullshit you should have said no to anyway.

The villain of the episode is the only sane character, especially when locking the tranny's team away so her girls (one of which is her daughter) don't get hurt by a narcissist teenage boy and that Asian fag that sounds like a boy.

Nathaniel Wayne, a very large, unpleasant man who calls himself 'Vera Wylde', a.k.a. Council Of Geeks, who regular readers of the Tranny Sideshows thread will no doubt be familiar with, has made a video that's almost an hour long, reeeeeing about Disney pulling this shitty cartoon.

There's something really entertaining about him breathlessly describing the events of the show in glowing terms, as if it is genuinely a work of artistic brilliance and genius, and his impotent rage at the 'disrespect' shown by Disney for shelving it.

As an aside, I do find it interesting the way that this argument against trans athletes in women's sports is framed. This a 'trans kids' issue. When most objections towards trans women in women's sport that I have seen surround adult men - Lia Thomas, Imane Khelif, etc. But framing it in those terms - an innocent child wanting to play a game and being unfairly victimised by a bigoted adult - it makes the trannies seem a lot more sympathetic than they actually are.

Wasn't Null going to do a livestream about this episode?
That was the plan, he briefly covered it on the 1 hour MATI that crashed early but said he'd do a deeper dive on the Gumroad. Also there's a good discussion of this episode on the Multimedia thread and someone did a great full-episode screenshot readalong that's perfect for consuming silently in a work space at your own pace.

Parts of the entertainment side of the media are finally staring to "get it" about the true level of public support for this kind of shit and how much of the public actively hates it... outside of elites and activist bubbles. It isn't the election results themselves that had anything to do with this but the exit polling over issues. One of the only true random large scale polling source that is hard to game the way most modern polls and surveys are done today. (tied to mag and media subscriptions that in the very best of cases treat non leftist/progressive opinions as simply wrong headed etc etc)

I said MovieBob loves the show.

MovieBlob likes it.. The ultimate red flag.
