I'm actually really curious how Charlie is gonna turn out here. Will he undergo a full length puberty? Will he only get a couple years worth of growth and then have it stop in his early twenties as per usual for men? It seems they took him off hormones because he already has osteoporosis and scoliosis, anymore of that and he'd be wheelchair-bound. Another thing a lot of people don't realize is that taking medication forever isn't necessarily going to produce the exact same effect as it has when you first started it. This isn't like feeding potions to a character on the screen. Any side effects will be amplified over time. It can permanently affect organ functions, not overnight but cumulatively.

Taking hormones in general is not something you want to do long term, because the body's own sensitivity and production react to their presence (ie juiced bodybuilders losing the ability to produce their own testosterone).

Giving a young adult male the same hormones you give a post-menopausal woman is already going to be a problem because it's going to take larger doses and he's going to be on them several decades longer, meaning several decades more to hammer the endocrine system and let the likelihood of cancerous mutations skyrocket.

Doing the same to an actual kid is even worse, because their bodies are even more sensitive as all the puberty hormone changes are trying to dial themselves in, and now you're talking many many decades longer than someone who starts them at 55-60.

I didn't even know they'd stopped giving it to post-menopausal women, I thought it was still just a balance between the benefits and the calculated long term risk (many only need it for a few years, but even if you stay on them, it's not going to be for 40, 50, 60 years. That makes it even more horrifying to say "sure let's take something too dangerous for elderly women to take for a few years, and get 25, 15, and 10 year old boys hooked on it for life".
