I don’t even like giving Nick the “functional addict” label because from my pov functional alcoholics manage to maintain schedules and hold down jobs. They might put vodka in their coffee at 6 am, but they are still up and getting ready for work at dawn. Nick was never that. Merely having to drive his kids sober to a homeschool capsule in 8 am was too much for him. His trust fund simply allowed him to appear to be a functional alcoholic. His only job was childcare taxi driver before 9 am some days and that became too much for him. As did expecting Nick to stream on a regular schedule or cover trials he didn’t like. Nick doesn’t have the discipline to be a functional addict, if he did he probably could have continued on for years using booze/drugs thanks to his parent’s wealth. It bought him a good decade as a lazy drunk.

I promise you whatever “real story” Nick might provide on day “when he can talk” it will boil down to being Kayla’s fault, in careful phrasing. He will praise her while throwing her under the bus. He would blame the kids too, but he’s got enough sense to not to do that publicly. One thing is for sure it’s definitely not Nick’s fault and it’s definitely not because he’s an addict!

The addict label really short circuits all of Nick’s complex explanations and narratives and that makes him seethe so bad.

The purposes of these LLCs are unknown, but in deciphering their names, may I put forward as a suggestion that Celeste apparently goes by both her maiden and married name, the initials of which give COR.

Looking at the title of this thread, Nick's initials are NRR, and KMC is consistent with his sister's first and last initials (KC).

This site sucks, but I assume that since there is no LLC listed as the owner/taxpayer, the Rekietas don't have that LLC for that purpose.

Also, Delaware is where you set up a company if you are doing business, but Nevada is where you set up a company if you are hiding assets. They make it very hard to figure out who owns an LLC and to get records for the LLC's business. The adult industry also uses Nevada LLCs frequently for this reason. I'm sure whoever did her estate planning set up those LLCs to help her give things to the kids.

It seems likely that Ty Beard has been giving estate planning and other legal services to Louis Owens and his foundation for many years now. Nick's mother, Celeste, serves on the board for the 'Louis and Peaches Owen Family Foundation' and providing services to the foundation is probably how Ty first met Nick.

Nick strictly speaking is probably correct, he doesn't have "a trust". As @Balldo's Gate and others found, Louis set up the several trusts and foundations before he passed (in 2016). They started giving away big money, like a hospital wing, in 2008. As far as we can tell, there's no significant payout from these.

However, Celeste set up 3 LLC's in Nevada in 2010. Two include her initials and, individually, the initials of each of her kids. (So Nick's is likely COR-NRR LLC, so Celeste Owen Rekieta and Nick Robert Rekieta.) There is a third, CBR, that could be Celeste and Bob Rekieta. (Unless she's just for some reason a huge fan of a somewhat obscure fan-made archive format for comic books...)

Why Nevada when they lived in Minnesota at the time (or at least Nick did)? Well for one thing, Nevada has no income tax. There may be other reason (not a lawyer), such as advantageous privacy laws for LLCs. But the no income tax thing leads me to believe that Celeste is managing "salaries" for both kids, as well as her and Bob, from three shell companies in Nevada.

The timeline also makes sense. Peaches and Louis had already given away millions a few years prior (2008 ). It probably made sense to set the kids up after that (2008-2010), and then for the kids to set up their businesses and what have you (2010 for Celeste).

If it were me I'd be fighting hard to see his trust documents so I can figure out if I'll be able to collect that way or not.

And this is why the Montegraph case could get really juicy in discovery. I don't think there's a practical way the public could ever find out about the nature of the Trusts or LLCs, certainly not disbursements they may be enabling. But Montegraph's suit could well bust that info open, at the very least the nature of Nick's income and where it's coming from.

Why ol' Balldo doesn't settle the case is a mystery, given the potential for more reputational damage it could cause.

Edit to add: Also, I'm not a lawyer or an accountant, but even I am aware that several/many states have residency requirements for qualifying for state income tax benefits (or payments). Nick may still have to pay and there may be another reason for choosing Nevada for all three LLCs. But... Bob and Celeste, I would not be surprised if their primary domicile is in Florida (no state income tax), and Nick's sister I think is still overseas? No idea where her permanent US residence may be, but I think she was last in Texas (also no state income tax).

It depends what you think addiction is. I think it's always a choice, even if it feels like it isn't.

Nick purposely says he isn't an addict because he could just stop. Well, he certainly fucked up his life before he did, was still drinking till June 6th or so, after his kids were taken and sounded under the influence on his call into Melton.

So, in Nick's fucked up explanation, because he can exert a degree of control sometimes he isn't an addict. Like he is the first one to pull that shit. It's literally what every "addict" says.

I'll also push back a bit on what it does. It doesn't just lower inhibitions. It completely rewires your pleasure, reward and risk brain chemistry. Deep in, you can't feel happiness without it. Further in, you no longer feel happy with it, just less terrible.

Nick refuses to admit he’s an addict, and blame everything on his “disease,” because that means he can’t enjoy drinking and drugs anymore. The minute he admits he might have a problem, then he’s got everyone on his back and monitoring his behavior and looking for signs of intoxication forever. He’d be expected to be sober, or try to be, for the rest of his life. Never a moment of peace to drink a handle and snort a gram, that’s hell on earth to Nick. He’s fine!!!

He’s already got his parents being parents to him again, and Kayla and his kids, and he’s seething about it. The irony is if Nick just could admit he’s got a problem they’d probably trust him a bit more and the CPS case would have gone a lot smoother. I blame YouTube more for allowing people like this to break into the mainstream. Especially in the early years, if you could manage to be entertaining enough for an audience of (mostly) children and teenagers to watch you play a popular videogame, rant about topics you didn't really understand, and/or tell "random" jokes, then you could end up Internet famous. It didn't matter if you were  actually funny, informative, creative, etc. You could be the guy who, ten years beforehand, would have told one joke that your circle of friends kept retelling for awhile, and get enough views to be A Big Deal on the platform at the time.

Chris-Chan got famous, but it wasn't a positive kind of fame, and he was known mostly within a relatively small Internet subculture. Some early YouTubers who had a mediocre selling point (especially Let's Players or comedic movie/game critics)  still have franchises. It's harder to break into the market now, since so many people are doing it, but that's where Rekieta managed to find his own niche with his knowledge of the law and a cultivated public persona.
