The one thing I might say in their defence though is that our leaders did everything they could to convince Ukie leadership we had their back. You had Biden, Boris Johnson, Nuland, et al. all flying to Kiev or rolling out the red carpet for Zelensky at home and saying "oh, yes - the weapons you need, the money you need, the training, our sanctions will cripple Russia, it's all good. We got you bro." The Ukies let themself get conned. Same reason everybody gets conned - they wanted to believe.
Should have familiarised themselves with the old quote from Kissinger: "To be America's enemy is dangerous. To be its friend is fatal."
(And for any supercilious Europoors, I'd point out that goes for our own economies as well, since we jumped when America said jump and turned a blind eye to the destruction of our pipelines and the damage the US sanctions were doing to us.)
