If you think that a "career path" is a single choice, you're doing it wrong. By its nature (clue: "path") it is a process. 17 is also appropriate for some of that preliminary decisioning because if you don't you may find some opportunities foreclosed or more challenging to grab. That said, in reality, few 17 yos are making concrete decisions about anything specific at that time. It's basically mostly just college as next step or not, and if yes, which kind. And even those decisions can be revisited later, without the drama of escaping a keeper.
