Chris chan is a bad example because he had horrible, insane parents who fucked up literally everything they could, starting when he was a young child and then of course most famously by not simply cutting off the trolls' access to him once he started getting all the internet attention. His autism could've been substantially mitigated to the point where he might even seem fairly normal, be able to hold a job, have friends, etc if his parents hadn't failed in every possible respect. There are adult "normies" into those, but they still can be "autism magnets" as well. And since there are railroad industry workers such as conductors, there's likely also "normie" adults into trains. Though any usual "normie" adult approach to trains is rather different and likely less obsessive than that typical autistic "foamer" approach.
And yep, autists can have the "arrested development" you mention, and be mentally younger or less developed than they are physically. How much seems to vary by the severity of the autism, with severely autistic people (such as "Chris Chan") being very underdeveloped.np
Trains do seem to enjoy some kind of global fascination and I really cant put my finger on why, but you're right there is appeal that extends past autists and children. There's an old trope about the middle aged dad whose midlife crisis manifests into building a giant train set in his basement and fiddling around with it regularly. I will admit when I went to Japan I was very impressed and loved to watch the bullet trains come into the station.
