Diseased Open Source Software Community - it's about ethics in Code of Conducts

For a while there was a project that nearly came close to becoming an actual discord alternative
There won't because there is no incentive. Discord solved the problem of fragmentation old communication vectors had with an in-browser client and zero hosting fees. There's nothing else normies want. Unless Discord miraculously goes bankrupted - you're stuck with it.

now that they're massive they seem to have trouble monotizing their service.
Yeah, I think everyone forgot Discord tried to replace Steam at one point with its own in-game store, but that turned out to be a massive failure. Ironically, Steam could have fixed their communication service, and they would have snuffed out some of Discord's share. But Valve was too late.

I don't think it was them being too late, I think it was them having absolutely no desire to moderate the cesspool that is the discord community.

Instead they can spend that money on making gaming on Linux good.
Steam moderation afaik is pretty decentralized because community moderators, not Valve employees, are typically responsible for content moderation. But that doesn't make it any better because again the deciding factor is the quality of that person.
But I won't complain since I do consider their Linux investment more important anyways.

part of me wishes xmpp had won, it feels the least niggerlicious in execution but it's still fragmented and all over the place in implementation on various clients. matrix has become the more famous alternative to discord in recent time but element is the only client that matters and its niggerrific to use.
somewhere along the two is probably something that'd work the best for everyone but even then you'd still have the problem of discord's network effects. they have become too big to fail but the moment things begin to affect users you'll see an exodus that'll put tumblr's to shame in terms of density of the most annoying, disgusting people on earth.

What fucked Matrix/Element for me, and a lot of people, was the fact they got rid of bridges. It was a really cool feature that allowed you to communicate with IRC and Discord servers via any Matrix client. It helped significantly with fragmentation, but they couldn't maintain it. Pidgin also has a similar feature, but its not popular either.

I think this might be more likely than you think, they blitz scaled to capture market share but now that they're massive they seem to have trouble monotizing their service.
This is the story of almost every webshit startup. It's especially bad in the case of Discord because what they're offering isn't really all that incredible; once Discord starts enshittifying to try and extract money, a different company that offers the same shit for free can and will easily take their lunch (and then implode in the same way 5-10 years later). It's like the cycle of free filehosters, except the sums of money involved have three extra digits.

They have no competitors. You'd think after all this time somebody would come up with something that at least has feature parity. Open source solutions like matrix are 15 years behind.

Open source solutions in that space always suffer from massive fragmentation. On the non-open-source front, there's no reason to compete with Discord right now because afaik they're still coasting by on VC welfare while being completely unprofitable and it's suicidal to compete with that. Once that money starts to run out, Discord will rapidly become (even) worse to keep itself afloat and competitors will start to pop up. They won't need feature parity at that point, any half-assed chat and video call service would suffice, and those are easy enough to make.

Only P2P solutions could work in OSS model.
If you have to create account in multiple places, or worse, have to manage server instance. It is never gonna be popular with normies.
Discord won because all you had to do is to create account and you were free to create server.
Convenience always wins.

That's also why unless Discord collapses it will remain as number one choice, it's just easier to stay where you are already

Removed bridges? I've stopped using most of mine since I deleted social media, but it looks like bridges are still maintained for the big networks. The signal bridge was even rewritten in Go and dropped the signald dependency:

Most big tech companies are. I thought Uber would collapse 5 years back. Netflix, Uber, Lyft, Tesla and others are just mired in debt. I don't think any of them turn a profit, or at least not a significant one. Tesla is completely beholden to insane government subsidies for their toxic Li-ion batteries.

There's another 2001 dotcom bubble coming, but it's going to be more like 2008 with "too big to fail" housing companies technology firms. Either they get a gooberment bailout or the VCs like Microsoft, State Street, Google and others get to decide which tech companies live and which ones die.

i've had the displeasure of being made aware of a blog post titled On "Safe" C++, which has only mostly to do with the topic at hand.
read it if you dare. here is a teaser of what awaits you

A blog about C++ and the first thing I see is: "CONTENT WARNING: Unfortunately, this post has mentions of rape and sexual"

This should be good.

This is also the same guy who whined about Stroustrup looking at him with disgust and walking away:

That blog has a couple of lulzy quotes

Several months later, I learned I had experienced slight brain damage due to hypoxia and I’ve been slowly recovering ever since. The worst part of all of this is that I said in that post that I was enjoying golang. In other words, I had brain damage and suddenly found writing Go to be fun. Take from that what you will 💀

As far as I remember, they did shutdown their libera chat (the biggest IRC server), and haven't really expanded the feature. Rizon had a bridge, but they stopped offering that one too.
they got banned because they're incompetent https://matrix.org/blog/2023/07/deportalling-libera-chat/

matrix is a pile of dogshit and it sucks dicks. even reddit knows it and it's usually shilled hard there (https://old.reddit.com/r/matrixdotorg/comments/1fgk1uq/rampant_pedophilia_on_matrixorg/)
