I know this is probably quite a large topic but can someone explain to me why she was hated so much, i know she shut down the mines and shit but there must be other things she did that was unpopular right?
It is. There's lots of little things, but a summary.
Poll tax: People should all pay the same level of tax for their property. Doesn't matter if its a 1 bedroom studio flat or a castle. Hit the poorest really hard and let the richest off easily.
Housing: Thatcher was genuinely frightened of Communism, and she thought the best way to prevent it spreading in the UK was to give away state owned council stock at bargain basement prices. You're less likely to approve of the USSR if you own property. The plan did work, but the USSR collapsed and there's been a shortage of rental property ever since.
Miners: Thatcher destroyed trade unions in the UK (I personally think this was a good thing, but most dont). They're all relatively toothless now, with exception to teachers and train drivers who can cause national problems when they get upset.
Falklands: Thatcher was unpopular, and she wanted a war. The Argentians before this used to sabre rattle, and the Brits used to send ships to scare them off. Thatcher basically allowed the invasion of the Falklands to happen, so she could have a war with a shithole she knew she would trounce and become a hero for beating. Obviously, this makes her hated by the families of the many men who died there.
Public services: Britain used to have state owned telecoms, electricity etc and she sold them all off to her allies for near free essentially. She sold state assets to buy support, and the country has suffered from this loss ever since.
One thing she did do though, that I referenced above that she gets no credit for is, you know, literally save the planet. A lot of the posters might be too young to remember but there was a huge thing in the 80s with the ozone layer being depleted and skin cancer rates skyrocketing. Thatcher, a Chemist, pretty much single handedly (until she got Ronnie on board) organised an international response to getting rid of the chemicals causing it.
Bad for the miners, bad for public services and soldiers but she really did save who knows how many lives in the decades since.
