My absolute favorite non-accomplishment that was spread far and wide in the 90's (see the attached 1 minute Nickelodeon PSA they'd play in February) is George Washington Carver "inventing" peanut butter when:
1.) There was a patent for peanut butter before he "invented" it
2.) PEANUT BUTTER IS A RECIPE, NOT AN INVENTION

At first I thought they just harped on this one to appeal to kids, but after looking into this shit more, it's really because they had to scrape the bottom of the barrel to find any semblance of black ingenuity.

I think what George Washington Carver did was pretty alright on the one hand. He was trying to find more uses for peanuts to improve the lives of poor southern farmers by convincing them to stop planting cotton. But if you look at his list of 300 inventions it strains the definition of invention because it's almost all existing products BUT WITH PEANUT OIL. Most of those recipes would go onto never be made again and have no impact on anything because they are terrible ideas. I guess this is the right thread to talk about a guy who's inventions include making fake meat and fake asparagus (???) out of peanuts using early 1900s tech though, what fucking horrors.

this is what happens when you're forced to pretend an already small subset of the population with incredibly short history in the first world is responsible for a good portion of contribution to said world just to pad out books
when you wanna pick any accomplishment made by a white man your cup runeth over with possibilities, you can metaphorically reach in and scoop a few dozen ideas, but when it comes to blacks you have so little to choose from, anything that comes you way goes

this isn't even an issue to do with their intellect, even if they were capable of inventing just as much, their small presence alone would make trying to match their accomplishments 1 to 1 a challenging task, but it seems now like there's this push to instill the subconscious belief that the races were never divided to begin with, that blacks were always just kinda there in the south american and european world from the beginning

His actual important invention was crop rotation involving peanuts and cotton, because cotton depleted the soil and peanuts are a strong nitrogen-fixing crop. The reason for all the ridiculous peanut oil inventions was that while this saved the soil, nobody had any idea what to do with all those peanuts.

So you got this peanut butter thing (which already existed anyway and it was Kellogg who patented the method of making it on an industrial scale) which sounds more like a joke than an accolade.

I wonder if this is a regional thing. I have a weirdly specific memory of seeing a black father introduce his young son to Schweppes at a McDonald’s we were in. (Probably because he opened the can in the restaurant and was presenting it like an old man imparting knowledge to the next generation). Otherwise, my observations are similar. Even my mom that worked in food service noted that most of the black kids in her line chose punch or brought Fanta in.

The OP all but salivating at the idea of a big fat check from a class action lawsuit gave me a good laugh. It’s always reparations or gimmedats with these folk, but that adds an extra layer of retardation. Reminds me of Polissa Campbell holding onto the belief for years that she’d get a massive windfall from a mattress class action settlement that she didn’t even qualify for because she lacked proof that she ever owned the thing in the first place. No effort, but give her all the gimmes. Dude’s lucky if he got a coupon for a free twelve pack if he even remembered to file a claim years down the road.

Huh. I didn't know ginger ale was so popular with black people. Then again I haven't touched the stuff since they stopped selling that raspberry ginger ale in the very early 90s
