I hate story's like this, the ISS and other closed cycle systems do this they distil the human safe liquid waste - Water an a lot of other liquids are a fucker to take into orbit (the only worse items are fluid / solid mixes) with current technology an recycling them is smart and undetectable and is reclaimed from the Astronauts breath and sweat as much as there piss, they also remineralise it and if that unit fails in the recyclable unit (basically a block of stone) the astronauts also take a daily multi multivitamin and also also have fortified foods, if anything it's that they are overly cautious with RDA's and it's a unspoken but interesting goal of the ISS is to see how humans interact in space flight with each other on all levels including social an cultural dietary requirements, they didn't want the Astronauts from one culture feeling left out over another (make sense for long duration flight) it's why Russian (an vaguely eastern European) missions have small bags of Vodka, Koreans have Kimchi, all Beef on the ISS is Kosher an Halal (the number 1 meat in space) etc and that is just the food let alone anything else culturally significant they make allowances for.
