Two 8-month-old pit bulls that were loose in Nanaimo attacked several children, severely injuring at least one. Other people that came to aid the children were also injured.

The children were playing in a yard at the house of one of their friends. The dogs were from somewhere else in the neighborhood and had been cited for being at large previously.

One of the owners of the dogs came and got the dogs but did not stick around. The news interviewed the other owner, a Dangerhair that looked to be in her late 40s or early 50s. While she was devastated at what her dogs had done, she said to the reporter, "People are saying, look at this from the prospective of a parent, well, these dogs are my kids, too," and then she broke down crying.

It was later reported both dogs were euthanized, as there have been other incidents prior to this one, and due to the severity of the injuries the one particular child sustained.

To the dangerhair dog owner I would have to say, "If these dogs were your KIDS, you did a lousy job of raising them. Thank heavens you didn't spawn any of your own."

Had a thought after spotting someone walking their pitbull this morning, why do pitbulls have the floppy ears? They're not cute like Scottish fold cats, and apparently they don't suffer from hearing loss over cartilage deterioration. So why is that a prominent indicator of the breed outside of their buttcrack skulls and dead eyes?

Because plenty of dog breeds have floppy ears? Some have prick ears (like Akitas, Corgis, and German Sheperds), some have floppy ears (Like beagles, Labs, and collies).

Terriers as a whole seems to be 50:50. And some only have prick ears because they're cut.

I don't entirely understand why the people who write these articles include images of the dog where it's whaling when they're trying to make it seem sympathetic. Either they're making a subtle jab (🌈) or they're just as fucking clueless about dog ownership as the people who own them.

"We shoved a camera in the face of this doggie who dindu nuffin - it's about to go on a toddler-killing spree, but isn't it CUTE?"

Ah, I just realized doing a quick search on dog breeds to compare ears that the pitbull must've gotten the ears (and head shape) from the bulldog, hence the "bull" part of their name.

Also just saw that on Chewy, they have a section on breeds of cat or dog, and:

Okay, so what even is the difference between your typical pitbull and the American bulldog? They look the same to me.

Honestly since pitbulls were developed by breeding several "bully" breeds together, they're all intermixed. Even genetic testing will bounce between Staffordshire/Bulldog/pitbull(and "pitbull" seems to be the terrier version of "supermutt"), and they all more or less look alike.

Edit: think of pitbulls as the "El Goblina" of the dog world.

This is fairly common content for the sub, people anon posting and aggregating info from various pitbull discussions from other groups like dog rescues, adoption ads, FaceBook postings, etc.

What frightens me though, assuming this story is legit (it is certainly typical for the breed) is that after mauling her son on the face this person didn’t immediately separate the dog from the kids and instead it got an opportunity to bite her other son as well. And that people with vet training had to tell her the score. Many people who own these dogs are dealing with a sunk cost fallacy and feelings of betrayal; they remember the dog as a puppy and see it do well in one situation (being fed by its master) and can’t understand why the dog is trying to bite their kids.

I guess what I got to say is no one free bite rule, esp if it ends with your kid in the ER. if your dog maims your kid the decision to BE should be easy.

By fixed you mean sterilised, I presume?
Sterilizing your pets is pretty common in America (esp after years of Bob Barker and other celebs doing awareness campaigns and funding low cost or free sterilization services for people who can’t afford the vet fees.) But pit enthusiasts seem to think their dogs’ offspring are commercially valuable and I’ve seen people trying to hawk pit puppies on Craigslist for anywhere from $50 to $2500. The reasoning is murky, and a lot of its wishful thinking. Some part of the trade is dogmen trading fighting animals too, and they won’t neuter because it makes the dog weaker and more docile in a fight, in addition to the whole stud racket if the dog wins fights. Therefore fighting dogs are nearly always intact.

Ig also there’s some people who won’t neuter a pit Bull because it’s “mean” or they have concerns about the dog getting obese after or whatnot, but those crises of conscience can happen with any owner of any breed of dog so I don’t think it explains why pits in particular are so often not spayed and neutered.

Something is very broken with pitbulls, they keep attacking despite the pain.
Late and gay but this is a molossoid characteristic. Most guard dogs have it, they are very resistant to pain, and you notice when you have one and they do the usual dog antics (run head first onto a glass door) and act like nothing happened right after. They sometimes don't seem to notice when they get hurt even to the point of bleeding, it's honestly impressive.

Pitbulls have this characteristic to an extreme, its so they will keep fighting on the pit even if the other dog has tore their limbs out.

It's always facinating to see a dog's breed purpose come to the forefront completely untrained.

Terrier who go apeshit on small(er) rodents, Border collies and the other shepard breeds going full shepard mode with groups of either animals or mobile kid toys. Dobermans, Chow Chows and Sharpeis protecting their owner/family from anyone they don't know/like.

And they don't even need to be trained to do that.
Fighting dogs don't need to be trained to fight, they already know how to and love it
