Unfortunately, self-avowed communists can easily shrug that off by suggesting that it only refers to authoritarian communism, or more specifically soviet communism.
The fact that these people keep on pulling the "not true Communism" card just makes it even funnier, since you can make that case for any war crime or crime against humanity.

The funny thing is, you can make a decent argument for that last one, because there are fascist countries like Francoist Spain which rejected the Nazis' race-based ideology and even gave refuge to Jews in WW2.
I mean, the people behind neo-marxism, the authors of so-called "cultural marxism," the Frankfurt School, were motivated by what they perceived to be Russia's failure to implement their ideal version of communism, and figuring out why communist revolutions only happened in backwards shitholes, and not developed western countries.
Communism doesn't happen in developed, western nations, because Capitalism is too well-entrenched in them. They have both the conservative/religious people and the liberals believing that Capitalism is something they cannot remove. Hell, if an actual Communist revolution broke out in those countries, a lot of those fart-huffing Marxist intellectuals would be classified as bourgeoisie trash and would get liquidated post-haste. The people behind the Frankfurt school would be some of the first victims of the new iteration of Communism if it ever arose in a developed, first-world nation.
Marx himself said that it was likely that he'd make an ass out of himself, or that his theories would fail to play out. All it takes is a little bit of dialectics or word games (not real communism) in order to dig themselves out of it, which is why communism as an ideology continues to survive even as it fails time and time again.
Basically, you require more faith than Christians or any religious group in order to believe in Communism. It's been proven empirically to be an unworkable system, yet its promise is just that tempting that people keep trying it again.
