KR South Korean president declares emergency martial law, accusing opposition of anti-state activities

Article | Archive

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared an “emergency martial law,” Tuesday accusing the country’s opposition of controlling the parliament, sympathizing with North Korea and paralyzing the government with anti-state activities.

Yoon made the announcement during a televised briefing. He declared the step as critical for defending the country’s constitutional order. It wasn’t immediately clear how the steps would affect the country’s governance and democracy.

Yoon since taking office in 2022 had struggled to push his agendas against an opposition-controlled parliament.

Park Chung Hee is that you?

I didn't know the gooks were this authoritarian.
They love a dictatorship. Of all the yellow people, they are the most buglike, even the Chinks have a small spark of humanity left. Worst Korea is an insane asylum, it's difficult to really understand unless you've had to spend time there.

i literally just fucking submitted a research proposal on north korean-chinese relations, thanks ASSHOLE

live thread from BBC:

"Yoon said the decision was made to remove pro-North Korea forces from the country and to protect the liberal constitutional order.

Yoon said he had no choice but to resort to martial law, but did not say in the address what specific measures will be taken."

There was a point in history when both South Korea and North Korea were dictatorships so maybe that norm is returning or maybe not. It's hard to say what Yoon Suk Yeol will do.

I've watched several documentaries about South Korea, a couple specifically on K-Pop. I think I understand a little. K-Pop is especially demented because it portrays something that does not and can not exist: a person (the star) who seems all powerful and free with a robust social life, but nothing could be further from the truth. Everything they do is carefully controlled, they are an automaton in isolation. The common people are desiring to be or be with someone/something that never existed in the first place.

Edit: I don't know how to confirm this, but I heard the government subsidizes the k-pop for "national morale." It's propaganda.

This supposedly has something to do with Samsung, because of course, but I'm trying to get more info
I have not seen anything about Samsung. It's being alleged that the opposition party (that I think has a majority in their parliament) has been infiltrated by Communist/North Korean assets. That's the most we know so far.

*Edit*. Yeah, as reports come in, this seems like he's trying to avoid being impeached, I would have predicted Trump doing this first.

I heard apparently this was all done just to try and get himself out of being impeached.
As president, Yoon has received mostly low approval ratings. The 2022 Seoul Halloween crowd crush[9] and 2024 South Korean medical crisis occurred during his administration, with the latter still ongoing.[10] Critics have alleged that, under Yoon, South Korea has been experiencing democratic backsliding. He has been accused of using government institutions and police to retaliate against critical journalists, overusing his veto power, and favoring far right political pundits and historical figures. He has made a number of anti-feminist statements. His party lost in a landslide in the 2024 parliamentary elections, and his power has since been evaluated as significantly weakened, leading Yoon to declare martial law in South Korea on 3 December 2024.

genuinely seems like it

Yonhap are saying that the People Power Party (the president's OWN PARTY) are going to block this

This decision came after the opposition Democratic Party railroaded a downsized budget bill in the parliamentary budget committee, and submitted impeachment motions against a state auditor and the chief prosecutor.
The defense minister has ordered a meeting of key commanders and called for tightened vigilance, the ministry said Tuesday, after President Yoon Suk Yeol declared emergency martial law.

The minister has also ordered the military to stay on emergency guard, it added.

The move came after Yoon declared martial law, citing the need to eradicate pro-North Korean forces and uphold the constitutional order.

Entry, exit from National Assembly blocked after declaration of martial law

North Korean TV hasn't started for the day, it's due to start in around 3 hours. Will keep an eye on it.
