  • 🔧 At about Midnight EST I am going to completely fuck up the site trying to fix something.
I wonder if there could be a service renting out tape machines so that someone comes by once a month to your place to do an incremental backup, with you holding onto the tapes.
There’s not really a market for that when you can just encrypt your backups and send them off over the internet. They can still be stored on archival tapes if you want them to be, and thanks to modern encryption taking hundreds of thousands of years on average to crack, including quantum- resistant algorithms, the fact that someone else has physical access doesn’t really matter.
 
Best Buy ended up canceling my order, I had a feeling that would happen considering that the SSD I selected was only available for pick-up. :(

I'm leaning towards one of the 4TB drives (I've already placed a hold on the 4TB 990 Pro with heatsink), I would've liked to pick up the heatsink-less 990 PRO but they're sold out. I was also looking into Crucial's SSDs but sadly a lot of 'em are sold out or have not-so-great write speeds.
I would consider WD a step over Samsung.
I actually was considering WD but sadly I could only find 1TB SSDs
The Samsung SSD is good but make sure the firmware is up to date. There really shouldn't be any floating around on retail shelves that contain the premature wear bug but better safe than sorry.

The heatsink will depend on if your motherboard can take it with it on. Some boards use the NVMe heatsink for other parts so you can't use a drive with a heatsink. Although I think that's not a problem for the proposed MB I see in your post history.

Now, you can remove the heatsink(at least on the older ones) but it's a pain in the ass and voids the warranty.
 
Pretty much all of the reliable non-piece of shit LTO 9 drives I know are 12Gbit SAS. I've never seen another interface on a LTO 9 drive. UNITEX makes one with a USB 3 interface, but it's twice as expensive as a Quantum LTO 9 drive goes for, and I have only heard bad things about UNITEX (drive failures, cutting up tapes, endless RMA's), although the actual mechanism lookes quite similar to what you will find in a HPE or Quantum drive.

Unfortunately LTO 9 is quite an expensive hobby to get involved in, and mini-SAS/SFF-8644 is the connector to be found on all the external drives that aren't pieces of shit. If you are looking for cheaper options consider one of the older LTO generations, as there is a pretty good second hand market for those already.
Yeah, my goal HPE Ultrium LTO-9 is 12gbit SAS. A used internal LTO-7 drive is also $4000 off ebay, which is bullshit considering LTO-9 doesn't cost a lot more. I saw a $2000 LTO-3 drive. Lastly, all the tapes I can find are also LTO-9 anyway these days.
By the time I save up, maybe there will be LTO-10 with a couple of hundred bucks difference.

I had a look at some videos on YouTube about that subject and it seems pretty easy, the main issue is the odd screws they use to pair the SSD and heatsink together and potentially needing to use a spudger to remove it.

That said I’m gonna cancel the hold or let it expire if I can’t do that in-store, A handful of WD Black SN850X 4TB SSDs popped up once the clock struck 12 but kept their Cyber Monday price (I put one on hold, there’s a $32 between it and the Samsung 990 Pro+heatsink after taxes), the Samsung 990 EVO Plus 4TB is also worth consider if I need a budget option, and just as I was typing this my local store restocked on the heatsink-less Samsung 990 Pro (but I’m not considering it since it’s $10 more than the one with the heatsink).
I'll admit to buying box only items, but only because I have an item missing a box. My collection purist can't let that go.
I mean I can understand it, I just find it funny due to how autistic some Funko retailers are regarding box condition.

I was going to be all ”um, just buy this?” and link a 4TB SN850X on amazon, but apparently the hardware market in USA is worse than the hardware market in Russia right now? None were available! What’s going on?

It’s probably due to Black Friday sales and people cash-sperging about Trump tariffs, a lot of stores had SSDs on sale.

Thankfully I managed to get a 4TB SN850X from Micro Center for $280 after taxes.

The SN850X is fine. I’ve got a bunch of them in my workstation, good performance and no failures so far. I’m sure you’ll be very pleased.
 
On the topic of SSDs, I'll be buying a 2tb NVME one for my unRAID cache drive. I did buy a Crucial T500, but it appears I have the only motherboard in existence that has a bizarre incompatibility with it (Aorus Z390) so i had to return it.

Would a WD blue do? it's the cheapest with DRAM and tbh I don't really know what im doing.

A cache drive is going to be hammered hard, and doesn’t really need to be big. Get something SLC, which I can guarantee you a WD Blue won’t be. Solidigm has some reasonably priced U.2 drives with SLC for basically this purpose.

But cache drives kind of suck anyway. I would move to ZFS, make a pair of optanes metadata special devices, and max out my RAM first.

The cache drive is basically gonna hold my docker image/containers and buffer read/writes. already have 32GB of RAM which is mostly overkill

I was actually at Micro Center on Black Friday to pick up my CPU/mobo/RAM bundle, it was a madhouse.

I’m mostly using this for gaming and, considering that my laptop’s 1TB drive is almost full, I figured I’d be better off safe than sorry and went with the 4TB SSD over a 2TB one.

As far as the “good performance and no failures so far” bit’s concerned I’m gonna err on the safe side again and get a warranty for it considering its $510 non-sale price.

Unraid sped here, unless you’re going mad (3+ lots of IO use) with VMs and have the domains share mapped to that cache drive you’ll be fine.

I’m more interested in what you’re using as a transcode/scratch disc for Jellyfin? If you have enough disks on your license still I’d recommend throwing an old 250+ Sata SSD in, excluding it from your main pool shares and putting a dedicated transcode share on that. That way you can thrash it to death with transcodes in isolation from your main shares/cache.

You can look up benchmarks for the CPU you currently have, and if the 1% lows are still faster than your target frame rate, then about all it will do for you in games is make you feel good about yourself.

What I have found, though, is that going from a quad-core i7-7700 to an 8+8 core i9-12900 resulted in being able to have a bizarre amount of browser tabs open, which is pretty neat. Alt-tabbing between a game and a web browser was a lot faster, too. Having all my office apps open? No big deal. You never really regret having too much memory or too much CPU power.
Bro I know. The i9 12900 is a monster with browser tabs and just general computation shit. It's a 13700 that's a bit less efficient but doesn't nuke itself. Which is true future proofed kino. I give a lot of the credit to the E-cores for the browser shit.

Intel announces Arc B580 at $249 and Arc B570 GPUs at $219

Intel Launches Arc B850 12 GB & B570 10 GB “Battlemage” GPUs For $249 & $219, Faster RT Than RTX 4060 & 10% Faster On Average (archive)

B570 has 83% (10/12) of the memory bandwidth with 10 GB VRAM instead of 12 GB for the B580, 90% (18/20) of the cores, 88% of the price. Should be $200.

Announced TDPs are 190W for the B580, 150W for the B570. Launch date is December 13.

Slide says it supports XAVC-H (never heard of it). I believe H.266 decode is not supported despite being included in Lunar Lake's media block.

Intel claims it's 10% faster than the RTX 4060. It could be considered a 4060 or RX 7600 XT (16 GB) competitor. 6700 XT comparison should also be interesting.
