KR South Korean president declares emergency martial law, accusing opposition of anti-state activities

Article | Archive

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared an “emergency martial law,” Tuesday accusing the country’s opposition of controlling the parliament, sympathizing with North Korea and paralyzing the government with anti-state activities.

Yoon made the announcement during a televised briefing. He declared the step as critical for defending the country’s constitutional order. It wasn’t immediately clear how the steps would affect the country’s governance and democracy.

Yoon since taking office in 2022 had struggled to push his agendas against an opposition-controlled parliament.

The army is backing the president, so that means the US knew before hand days in advance and didn't send the CIA director to warn them off like they did here in my shithole against pulling a coup.

So i guess the US is supporting whatever this is.

Does America care which party is in control? Both parties are pro-American and have strong foreign policies.

Glóir do Dhia! This is great news! Korea can now be purged of degeneracy.
The government needs to crack down on this immediately. Dissent must not be tolerated lest the degenerates overthrow the government.

Oh look, something's actually happening for once. This will be interesting to watch.

As president, Yoon has received mostly low approval ratings. The 2022 Seoul Halloween crowd crush[9] and 2024 South Korean medical crisis occurred during his administration, with the latter still ongoing.[10] Critics have alleged that, under Yoon, South Korea has been experiencing democratic backsliding. He has been accused of using government institutions and police to retaliate against critical journalists, overusing his veto power, and favoring far right political pundits and historical figures. He has made a number of anti-feminist statements. His party lost in a landslide in the 2024 parliamentary elections, and his power has since been evaluated as significantly weakened, leading Yoon to declare martial law in South Korea on 3 December 2024.

genuinely seems like it

I might be retarded, scratch that I am retarded but how did his party lose in a landslide? It looks like they picked up 5 seats, even the swing to the democratic alliance was less than the swing to his people power party. (3.64pp vs. 1.66pp)
and it seems to get more grim for the alliance in the regional fields where they lost 6.66pp and his party gained 2.83pp)

Is it just because the other party has gained so many seats from way before any of this that unless he manages to completely reverse it everything will count as losing in a landslide, because from here it looks like his favorability is actually increasing. But even so, how would his power have weakened if his party has more seats? Disgruntled party members?

In 2020, the democratic alliance had more of a lead

There's an ongoing medical strike happening, for example. The guy doesn't seem to be able to handle crisis all that well
He sucks at handling them, he's been facing calls to stop cockblocking investigations into his wife for corruption, which ironically is what got the only female president in prison for.

Perhaps the motivations of the South Korean military leadership are just opaque to the US glowies, who are usually retarded, and this came as a surprise to the people of luminosity as well.

Apparently he isn't even the first one, but its well known that Asia loves having christians as its leaders.

Hopefully he can do what Diem sadly failed to do in Vietnam in Korea: Catholicize and reunite the nation.

Well I mean with military backing he can probably break the strike…

So what makes him unpopular? Curious to see if Korea's CNN equivalent has a hate boner for him.
My guess is that this is because his political allies constantly get into corruption scandals, most notably his wife.

His pro-Japan stance is also unpopular amongst a lot of people in the country, even if the same people agree with his other policies including his hardline stance against NK.

Huh. Literally last night I was saying to my husband that I have this funny theory that we're about to have a lot of revolutions because of all the men who can't find any way to build a family. Historically, having a bunch of men in your society who can't get a wife (and therefore have nothing to live and pay taxes and work for, just a life of grinding ahead) is untenable, you end up having to send them to war or otherwise expend your angry young men in order to avoid revolutions.

When I said this to him he said, "well, we'll see, because if you're right, South Korea will be first on the list to erupt, their reproduction rate is rock bottom and the women are all going Lysistrata."

Less than twelve hours later, this. Makes ya thunk.
