South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared an “emergency martial law,” Tuesday accusing the country’s opposition of controlling the parliament, sympathizing with North Korea and paralyzing the government with anti-state activities.

Yoon made the announcement during a televised briefing. He declared the step as critical for defending the country’s constitutional order. It wasn’t immediately clear how the steps would affect the country’s governance and democracy.

Yoon since taking office in 2022 had struggled to push his agendas against an opposition-controlled parliament.

The livestream Im watching has blown out kpop in the background of what seems like hundreds of police busses being moved in, such a wild vibe

Edit: jesus the kpop cut out and it was silencing a man who is shouting at what appears to be the top of his lungs in korean about god knows what, harrowing to hear though, man sounds in anguish

I thought the military stayed and is still following orders until president lifts it?
they're staying to provide security not to jail congressmen or civil protestors. i'm sure there's a group of PPP fanatics trying to opposition leader lee again or the general populace trying to lynch President Yoon because everyone really hates him and his cunt wife.

This is such a terribly executed martial law. It's almost like a last minute solution to whatever problem the president is facing.

You should look into when Taiwan actually became democratic if you want to risk a heart attack.
All members of the Legislative Yuan were democratically elected. It's not their fault their Chinese constituencies were "rebel territory" and it wasn't feasible to run elections.
Thus representatives kept their seats for decades unchallenged, until 1991 when president Lee redefined the country to just being Taiwan and surrounding islands.

There have been fake shootings and arresting of politicians in recent years, but it is slowly evolving into mature and non-tribal headcount democracy.

It really helps the chances of success when you don't throw a coup in a panic like seemingly happened here. You want your ducks in a row when taking such a big gamble.
Yeah I will admit this definitely could have been executed better. But sometimes you have to rush it, for instance if someone outside the circle learns about it.
protesters are being encircled tighly right now
That's good news. Hopefully things calm down and YSY can consolidate power.
