Anyway, I guess the short version of this is that I don't think people need to be associated with all of Shmorky's personal grossness because we associated with him professionally.
Yeah, I think it's easy to forget that interacting with people online doesn't mean you "know" them in any real sense of the word. We live in an age where you can collaborate with people on major projects without ever spending a minute around them in real life or even having a phone call with them.
The commission stuff was plausible to many people because a lot of artists of various kinds have done work they didn't like doing to pay the bills. You need a certain level of financial stability before you can pick and choose your jobs, and most people never attain that level of success.
The pieces of the puzzle may have been there all along, but no-one really had access to all of them to put them all together.
