  • 🔧 At about Midnight EST I am going to completely fuck up the site trying to fix something.
I checked the Jakedev stream for 11/29/2024.

Jake is "half comatose" from eating "very high-sugar high-carb stuff" (including potatoes and pie), also exhausted from seeing family.

He is "VERY broke, broke enough that I kind of promised myself I wouldn't be working on this right now"

His plan for gainful employment remains to promote his streams on Bluesky, and also look into "car-based gig economy stuff".
Alas, his car woes are multiplying, as in addition to the random shutoffs, he either got a rock stuck under a brake pad or bent an axle while driving through a road under construction, he's not sure which. (There's really only one road in town this could be and it's not that bad)

Images from the stream, besides the same old circuit board he's been working on all year:

1733200614553.png

A rendering of the same old circuit board. Jake wants to learn Blender so he can design the shell to go around it.

1733200648018.png

Jake's retarded scribbles of how the controller is assembled. Left side: shell and cord stress-reliefs. Right side: the insides - circuit board and pads and such. The colors are just random, probably not representative of anything apart from the face buttons which are troon-flag-colored.

Also, he leaves the status bar with a "jakea" path up for the whole stream - so much for paranoia.

It doesn't even really take a geneticist to understand the really simple concept that any protein the body makes, or any endogenous amino acid, or any of the absolutely necessary processes to keep you alive, involves stuff encoded in DNA. Jake somehow seems to think it just does nothing? That somehow the body is consuming immense amounts of energy to generate literally trillions of copies of a difficult molecule to copy, any time a cell with a nucleus is made, and this is just for no reason at all?

It's just hard to wrap my head around how anyone could be this ignorant of the most basic shit. I'm sure there are high school dropouts aplenty of even lower than average intelligence who could grasp the concept even if they forgot the specifics.
The problem you're having is that you are treating Jake Alley like he is a rational person capable of basic understanding. He isn't. For people like Jake science isn't field of research where you figure out how the world around us works and functions. For them it is nothing more than a magical force that can bend things to their whim.

It reminds me of this Moviebob tweets from years ago:
bob on science.png

Reality doesn't exist to these people. They don't want understanding, they want things to be placated to their miserable view on life.

Does Jake normally remove Twitch streams? His Monday gaming stream isn’t on the site anymore. I caught a little bit of it but it’s pretty dull. The times I checked in he was playing different games and commenting on them but nothing personal or particularly funny.

Does Jake normally remove Twitch streams?
I believe he mentioned somewhere that it happens automatically after a week or two, which is why he makes all those individual clips out of them to preserve his business product. The full stream copies typically seem to appear a day or two after the original livestream.

Funnily enough, Jake just posted about this.

The latest stream is up at https://m.twitch.tv/videos/2316915341 again now, with chapters too. Looks like it'll expire after a period.

Does Jake think he's finished, because, erm... that ain't gonna work.
Literally doesn't have power and ground hooked up to anything, random ass vias everywhere... and what even is this?

For the love of god, someone buy Jake a prototype board. He's going to waste so much of his precious money if he ever gets these made.
Edit: Watching Jake's stream, that track is absolutely batshit.

Red arrows for traces on the back of the board, blue for traces on the front.
The circled bit on the front isn't even crossing another track. It just decides to be on the front of the board for a while for no reason whatsoever.
(Also, Jake is under the impression that chopping off random corners of the board is going to make it cheaper to manufacture as if somehow you could tessellate a bunch more of these weirdo shapes on to single blank, rather than just ending up with a bunch of waste offcuts.)

Edit 2: I just noticed he doesn't even have enough resistors on the board. It's supposed to have 16 pullup resistors, one for each input on the two 8 bit shift registers. He's got 10 on the board. This is so fractally wrong, every time I look at it it gets more fucked.)

Oh no. He thinks he's finished.

Oh jake, no. Please. Don't have this landfill fodder shipped half way around the world. Please, think of our planet.

chatgpt says "For a simple, small, single-layer PCB, you might be able to get 500 units produced for as little as $1-$3 per unit, not including shipping." does that sound about right? so maybe $1200, conservatively, to get a batch made & delivered?

maybe he will hold off until he's also created the casing...

And let us recall, this isn't even his design! He just spent months upon months hand-copying an existing, working design. If something's missing, it's because he couldn't even understand what he was copying.

So, it's literally just a trans-coloured controller? Like, he could literally just design the shell of an existing model instead of working out the wiring himself?

alright, i've seen enough. where's the go fund me?
Here, apparently.

Are 120 people seriously giving this man the equivalent of a month's worth of rent to claim to have no money?

...I'm not jealous, you're jealous.

I presume that's with pick and place, you can have the bare boards made for quite cheap these days even in early prototype quantities. You still have to pay for shipping though.
That said, I wonder if Jake wants these pick 'n' placed? He's used surface mount components, even for a board that could perfectly well be made with through-hole stuff. It's a bold choice for someone who has zero experience with soldering.

That may be the best outcome all round, really. I think the spacing on his resistor pads are all wrong and that would get automatically flagged as an error if he tried to get these actually manufactured because it would be trying to put resistors on top of each other, so Jake would have to go back to the drawing board.

I kind of feel sorry for Jake. I think I might have to try to catch one of his dev streams live so I can go tell him how much he's fucked this up. As much as he's a useless gnome, he is at least trying however badly to do something and I really don't want him to waste his money.

For a simple design like that he can make the PCB at home (to see if it even works) if he gets hold on some of the materials and a photocopier(to create the mask).

It's essentially an SNES controller, but with the locations of the buttons rearranged (some moved to the back as triggers), and a scroll wheel added. He couldn't quite use an existing model, it does have to be a new PCB.

Strangely enough, the answer seems to be yes, over 100 individual smallish donors. Nobody knows why, but he did (does?) have a very persistent signal-booster for his begs in the "mutual aid" sphere of Twitter.

It's a bold choice for someone who has zero experience with soldering.
Au contraire mon frère, Violet has many valuable skills and she could start up an electronics repair shop of her own with what she's learned on this project! Alas, electronics repair shops are not "a thing" anymore.

I really don't want him to waste his money.
On the other hand, I do want him to waste his paypigs' money.

One of the things that really stands out to me about Jake, much like Jack Scalfani, is that he actually has some ambition and drive in him. He is just so functionally inept that it doesn't matter what he does because he will always screw it up due to his inability to perform whatever actions are needed for what he is trying to do at the moment.

This only adds more into what I posted about yesterday in this thread: Jake doesn't even attempt to try to understand how a controller functions because it might as well be a magical artifact to him. The parts of circuit board don't hold importance with what actions they perform, they are nothing more than random lines and raised bumps to him. He'll just design whatever he wants in his head and expect it to work.

I hope he does move forward with this so he could only further drag himself into debt.

What???
Take a look at Jobstream 1, the sum total of his ambitions is "Keep doing exactly what I'm doing now but get paid for it somehow". If his Patreon went up to $2500/month he'd never do anything again.

Also, he pretty much doesn't work on his projects at all outside of the biweekly Jakedev streams. He even said he started doing them to force himself to work. Notice that the dev streams are usually about an hour, compared to the 10-hour pissbottle marathons when he's gaming.

As I said above, he is marred by his own laziness and ineptness. The fact that he does try to pursue certain ventures shows that there is some desire to climb higher in life. For as lazy as Jake is, there are people who would have never even tried to venture out into these things in the first place because it requires taking a single step forward. The fact that he can take a, even a minor baby one, step forward is somewhat commendable in todays society.

That is the thing with certain cows such as Jake: they have one piece of the puzzle needed to be a successful person. But they are missing all the other pieces and have no one upstairs who can even assemble it.
