It is possible to draw from imagination purely. But not the way people try to. If you do iterative drawing and keep refining, it is possible. I would start with a simple gesture then draw it again and build the form more and if I fucked it up I go again and keep refining.I don't get it myself. Drawing from imagination is incredibly difficult. There are days where I'll just be drawing aimless boxes trying to hash out a form, and you certainly don't learn anything by refusing to look at real bodies to discover how they work. I'll never understand people who think using references is cheating.
You are drawing from imagination, but you are using that rough drawing as a reference and building up more detail so you can get a clearer image each time. It's a bit of a hybrid between referencing and imagination.
Edit: I should also note that this is basically a drawing exercise, if you are doing a serious piece for your portfolio you should reference and use every method available to you. I have seen very respect artist even paint over photographs for thumbnails or use a projector to transfer their sketch onto canvas. No rules only tools.
