In her case, I think she’s just opportunistically taking advantage of the pandemic so that she can present herself as a hero to lefty furries. I think her role in developing the vaccine was relatively minor-she’s just one of the worker bees-but that makes her a superstar to furries.

Another theory I have is that furries like to present themselves to Normie‘s as being incredibly smart and incredibly useful-“see we’re not a bunch of useless porn addled weirdos, we actually make your lives better!“ So she may do it to play into that as well.

It's pretty simple: Clout. Picture, for a second you are a furry (I know, nobody reading this thread possibly could), a socially ostracized and hated community. And you have a job that isn't in a fast-food chain but something that requires higher education and is relevant to current politics/topics. You get cited by other furries as a shining example of "look, not all of us are homestuck retards!!!!". People listen to you. Anything you tweet gets that sweet, sweet engagement. You're basically a low-level celebrity. People get drunk on the hype of seeing their own name mentioned by thousands, it's just as addictive as any drug.

She has not come down from her high, she is just hiding and posting on platforms where she can be assured to only get positive responses and further asspats, i.e. Bluesky. It's a good "step up" in the fandom given there's so many people, and without artistic talent, or some other hook, said person can easily disappear. My two pennies: One head of a hydra called "pure delusion". Furries want to have their cake (being disgusting in public with no consequences) and eat it too (be regarded as "normal" in society, or outright praised for doing jack shit because they're "special"). They try to bootlick all these "exceptional individuals" to make them look good without actually putting in the effort themselves and forget that anyone with internet access who's had enough exposure to these freaks, or browsed a furry feed for five seconds, knows by pattern recognition that an enthusiastic member of the "fandom" is either a potent autist or some kind of disgusting fetishist (often both) by default.

But I also think part of it is that it's a fandom with no real focus (unlike most fandoms centered around a single media) other than the AIDS-fueled nepotism of an ideal self through "OCs" and the burning desire to show off fetish content to children, often trying to skirt the rules with "non-explicit" in the name of "healthy sexuality" (shit like pup gear at conventions, the boob horse incident, Changed, etc..). My stance as an observer has pretty much settled on the belief that anyone who likes anthropomorphic characters, however autistic they might be, is a thousand times better off reigning themselves in and treating association with the furry fandom like choosing whether or not to sit next to an unwashed stinking retard with ham-fists and grimy fingernails. Plus if you're already a retard yourself, you can at least make sure you aren't picking up on bad behavior.

From what I've seen, most people either try to turn the other cheek (a friend of mine went to a local convention after it was found the person running it was actively sheltering a zoo/pedo who was caught, less than a week prior, luring a 12 year old girl. Friends argument: "i won't let a bad egg ruin my good time") or they step away from the fandom and get attacked online for doing so.
Some do become anti-furry.
I know a few therians/otherkin who were furry and left to find a less toxic group, only to find the worst zoophiles were in both groups.

A lot of it is that furries just can't handle the normal world, so they retreat into gatekept little friend groups. I know a some older furs do that because it's easier to pick and choose who your friends are, who your "family" is, verses having to deal with normal, real family members or friends that might not share your viewpoints. Once someone develops beliefs that go against their own, then that person is shunned and the next friend pops up.
