The designated Root Beer (and Sasparilla) thread - For me, it's 1919

I'd kill a nigga for a Sioux City Sarsaparilla but thankfully I don't have to because they sell them at Cracker Barrel.
Thank you so much for mentioning Cracker Barrel because I realized I never went in there to check out what sodas they carry, so I went and my months long journey came to an end.

Cracker Barrel actually carries BIRCH BEER!

So satisfying trying this stuff after such a long search, especially since this stuff is REALLY GOOD! Probably my favorite soda I've ever tried, so the months of searching were worth it 100%. Everyone was right that it tastes just like wintergreen, kind of tastes like Barq's without the root beer flavor and is just the pure bite instead, I love it. I will definitely be getting a case of this stuff soon and if you have never tried it, you have to, especially if you like wintergreen.

Cracker Barrel also had many other sodas so I got a couple other root beers to try as well as some Sioux City Sarsaparilla in honor of @Oddjob OTP for making me aware of Cracker Barrel carrying this stuff in the first place.

I've seen many people say sarsaparilla is near identical to root beer but after trying this stuff I have to disagree, it tastes candy like almost and very distinct from root beer. Pretty good stuff, will get it again in the future.

Now on to the root beers

I was very excited to try this stuff since I've heard of it for years and everyone seems to like it. I wasn't let down that's for sure. Every different root beer has a unique flavor to it and this is no exception, the only way I can describe it's taste is that it's very "zesty". This may sound strange, and it kind of is, but the most strange thing about it is how the "zestiness" actually works well. Pretty tasty and unique and I can see why some people swear by this stuff.

Brownie Caramel Cream Root Beer, I'm aware that there's many different sweeteners that can be used in root beer to give it a more unique flavor, such as honey (Sprecher) or molasses (maybe Mug?) so I thought trying one that uses caramel would be a good idea. I was wrong. The flavor is 95% super sweet and strong caramel and 5% root beer. I looked into it and I see that it's very popular and celebrated stuff so I guess this is more my problem than the drink's. I can only recommend this stuff to big fans of caramel and I can't recommend it to root beer fans.

My ranking of root beers from best to worst:

1. Sprecher: The most tasteful and delicious root beer I've had yet, perfection.

2. Barq's: They don't call Barq's the "Coke of root beers" just because Coke distributes them, but also in how timeless and iconic their blend is. I always thought Barq's was a more minty root beer which works best for my taste than other root beers do.

3. IBC: This tastes very strongly of black licorice to me and I love it since I'm a licorice fan, I'm not always in the mood for it but the mood still strikes often and I have to pick some up.

4. Dad's Old Fashioned: (See the post above)

5. A&W: This is the most average root beer that exists, You can do much worse than this but you can also do much better.

6. Brownie Caramel Cream: (see the post above)

7. Mug: Not a very pleasant taste in my opinion, it tastes like very artificial molasses. I imagine this is one of the worst root beers you can drink.

8. Virgil's: This isn't even a root beer really. It tastes terrible and unlike how a root beer is suppose to taste in every way, it gave me a stomach ache drinking this shit as well. Since trying it I've learned that this is actually the rootbeer Reddit's choice of best Root Beer ever or some crap. Very unsurprising to me that Reddit would love this garbage, and it makes me question what I put into my body more than I would most other "natural ingredients" beverages. It's also insanely expensive, If you are wanting a high class root beer, do yourself a favor, get yourself a case of Sprecher, and stay far away from Virgil's.

Frostie and frostop are two stand outs for me. And this Coney Island hard root beer, that was better then that not your father's garbage. But only existed for a few years, I never see at anymore.

Frostie soda in general is very underrated never had the root beer but their blue lemonade soda is some of the best I've had and it's cheap.

I haven't had a root beer in ages, the last time I think I had one was when I was up in Canada and grabbed lunch at an A&W.

I really got have another one soon, it's been too long.
Is there any merit at all to warnings about not drinking too much home made root beer? I'm not talking about the safrole but rather the other supposed medicinal qualities the sassafras roots have that can apparently have side effects.
From what I've read it mostly boils down to hives and skin rash resulting from sarsaparilla allergies and headaches from licorice root.
It’s made with sassafras roots but they process out the safrole, which is basically the essential oil of sassafras roots. Luckily if you’re American you can just dig the shit up and make tea pretty easily, getting enough to brew a real root beer would probably be a big task.
That's ultimately what makes me shy away from drinking more root beer, bigger name-brand root beers more than likely use a mixture of other flavors, natural and artificial, to match the taste of true root beer and I'd much rather have it with the sassafras root safrole-free or otherwise.

It'd be bad opsec to name my favorite, but needless to say its very good and you can even get it on draft in frosty mugs at certain places.

Whenever I hit a soda fountain, though, I like to go half-n-half rootbeer and diet cola
It's not bad opsec to say "A&W". They're still all over.🤣

I don't drink much of that stuff anymore, but the Barq's is pretty good for mainstream root beer.

Boylan's is the best "craft soda" type that I've found. They have root beer, sarsparilla, and cream soda. And made with real sugar, as any proper soda fountain drink should be.

Anything that's not glass bottled or fresh fountain in an iced mug is not fit to be enjoyed, IMO. The Sprecher's and other boutique ones are interesting and now I'm curious to try them.

Man, what the hell. If I want to try Frostie, apparently I'll need to drive 30-40 miles or pay $50 to get four bottles shipped.

Birch beer is severely underrated. Boylan was fine, the red birch was nice though I can only find one store that sells it.

Fresh from a vending machine that hasn't had its display updated since 2002, button label is a piece of masking tape. Sweet nostalgia.
Definitely a regional thing. Someone else brought up Moxie which is specifically New England/Maine. I'm on the hunt for some spruce beer which is an eastern leaf staple but not dropping fifty some dollars to have a 12 pack imported. I will drink every tree in existence.

Holy hell dude I remember this stuff. Tastes amazing.
Moxie is really good, and served as the inspiration for Vim! in Fallout 4's Far Harbor DLC.

Amazon, man. Whenever I get a craving for birch beer, that's where I go.

Also, check Google Shopping. I just searched "birch beer" out of curiosity. Never seen it in any of the stores I visit, but apparently one of the stores near me not only sells it, but it's currently on sale.

Having just tried my first Frostie, I can say pretty definitively that they're okay. Not so much better than a Barq's that it's worth paying extra when you want a root beer. Might be worth it if you can just grab them from the store instead of having them shipped.
