Couple of things
  • Not in any actual list beyond the order in which I've played them
  • The Cautions section, I'm pretty forgiving when it comes to video games but I'll put either the questionable shit or what I considered to be the bad parts of the game at the start in order to avoid anyone with wildly different tastes from wasting their time.
    • I also realize a lot of the cons here will be "too easy" and I'd just like to apologize if it turns out my view of difficulty is heavily skewed.
  • I would have created seperate mp4s and compressed them for each game's trailer but I'm too lazy and it would probably have Null breathing down my neck for uploading so many relatively large video files that don't really need archiving.
  • As of writing this thread itch.io seems to be down so the links may be incorrect
  • There's a bunch of games I haven't played due to time or my PC just not being up to it so feel free to add your own.
Link

Cautions: It's a bit on the short side, my 100% playthrough took about 10 hours. The part where you unlock movement onto water is less fun than normal as the movement is a lot slippier and floatier.

What?: Zelda but a top down twin stick shooter.

Why?:I really have nothing bad to say about this game. Out of everything this year it was the most consistently enjoyable game of the bunch. If certain other games didn't have higher highs, this would have been my game of the year solely because it's just a very simple game that does one enjoyable thing and does it very well.

Link(Itch.io, free) Link(Steam , yet unreleased)
<No video>

Cautions: Puzzles centered around AI generated images of people and music. They're completely fine otherwise, but I know some people don't like that.
The steam version that is to be released in a month is supposed to get rid of all and add more stuff that but will also be a paid version.

What?: Puzzle game where you use a mock browser and various mock search engines to fill in the entire family tree of a candy conglomerate

Why?:
Just a pretty fun and unique puzzle game on what is arguably just an inferior clone to Obra Dinn. The genre is sparse enough and enjoyable enough to make even the "inferiors" worth playing"

Link(itch.io, free)
<no video>

Cautions: Really god damn hard near the end.

What?: Puzzle game that control/look like I Wanna Be The Guy fangames, but all the rooms are small locked room puzzles where you need to grab keys and put them into locks.

Why: Gets really hard and mindbending near the end. Just the kind of game that's uber simple but pushes its very simple concept to the limit and is incredibly satisfying to finish.

Link(Steam)

Cautions: Weebshit; Taiwanese developed weebshit; mellowdramatic/edgy weebshit where instead of everything being uguu and kawaii it's depressive and fucked to a ridiculous degree(there's also some implications of gore and body horror, you won't see it but you'll hear it); apparently related to a gacha(I'm told one cameo character is from a gacha but outside of her being chipper and uguu kawaii I don't know shit about that gacha and I didn't particularly care); stealth missions will either be really cool puzzles to you or extremely annoying savescum timewasters; chapter 4 has a lot of filler missions with no time limits and a fully kitted out team meaning they're extremely easy to cheese; people with limited reading comprehension or ability to decipher chinese->japanese->english translation may find trait descriptions poorly worded which may cause frustrating boss fights.

What?: "SRPG" in the vein of fire emblem but with guns, and you control a maximum of 6 hero units with a focus on their skills and varied playstyles/weapons.

Why the fuck?: Is a genuinely fun and challenging SRPG. Every level is you outgunned and outnumbered with the only advantage you have being skills and the ability to generate explosives, traps and turrets in very limited quantities. Also the story gets fucking wild later on.

Link(Steam)

Cautions: Might be boring if you don't like exploring huge areas while being restricted by fall damage, or if you don't like revisiting levels to go fast in them

What?: First person platformer. Every level introduces a new gimmick but the main two are climbing picks with a stamina bar, and CS surf map sliding and jumping off slopes.

Why?: Great if you're into 3d platforming that's fun in both chill exploratory playthroughs and GOTTA GO FAST BUNNY HOP BUNNY HOP SPEEDRUNNERS AINT GOT SHIT ON ME playthroughs

Link(Steam)

Cautions: Difficulty goes down once you get explosive weapons and becomes somewhat non-existent in the much more difficult "extra" challenges because some of the perks you unlock in that are stupidly powerful(like the "shoot down go up" one) that I'd recommend opting out of unless you're fucking around with a friend for a housegrown pvp match or something. Also music is extremely forgettable.

What?: FPS where you have a hoverboard that makes you go fast and can skate up walls, and a grappling hook for more speed/air control. It's "open world" in the sense that the entire world is a bunch of floating islands and each island has waves of enemies as a combat encounter to unlock perks/weapons/cosmetics. There's also a pickaxe you can use to dig through terrain/non-indestructible walls

Why?: Just perfect in every way to me. The movement is fast enough to be good on its own but has some mastery if you truly want to get the hang of it. Weapons are all projectiles with a small bullet travel time which makes high speed shots SUPER satisfying. And the fights are great once the game goes all in on larger enemy counts, large mechas with explosive weapons, hoverboard/magic/grappling enemies and shields. There's also a PvP perk for co-op which could be great with some houserules.
Supposed to have a workshop soon

Link(Steam)

Cautions: Can get a bit repetitive if the gameplay isn't your thing, multiclassing could have been tuned better, Rattler iceblock mechanics can get incredibly frustrating(an enemy can become active in front of you in the enemy turn and get to act immediatedly), music's by Steam Powered Girraffe which some people may not like because they're extremely fucking reddit/have a troon but I think this is one of their better albums.

What?: Sequel to Steamworld Heist 1, a robot piracy themed 2d turn based tactics game focused around ricocheting bullets and explosives in small rooms. In 1 this was space ships, in 2 this is submarines and ships.

Why?: It's just fun, nigger.

Link(Steam)

Cautions: Can be casul babbyshit for the hardcore™ crowd. Lots of cat puns.

What?: A very laid back pirate themed hack n slash adventure game

Why?: Despite being pretty casual there's a lot of passion put into the game that shines through most of it. It being an easy game also makes it a great co-op game with a younger family member.

Link(Steam)

Cautions: Some people dislike the plot/music and think it's inferior to the first game while I'm of the opposite opinion. Chapter 4 feels like filler in lots of ways, particularly the Aviary puzzle. Not nearly as difficult as the Golden Idol Mysteries DLC with a lot of puzzles that feel like easy mode guides to ensure that you have all the leadup details correct instead of just dumping you in the final puzzle. Also the UI being draggable windows instead of its own panel leads to a lot of shenanigans with window ordering.

What?: Sequel to the Case of the Golden Idol. You view a scenario at some point in time and point and click various areas to gather words which you then slot into word puzzles which check if you've deduced what's actually happening in that scenario.

Why?: Just the kind of puzzle game that makes you feel great. Extremely laid back, no huge leaps of logic, comfy thinking music(that I've added to my playlists), a compelling plot with all of the progression being you realizing more and more of what's actually happening and is also great to co-op with a family member who doesn't play video games but likes puzzles.

Link(Steam)

Cautions: Apparently tagged as an LGBBQ game on steam but there's nothing like that ingame. the most you get is someone jokingly calling another dude "babe" but it could be interpreted as nerves since the former is on the team currently being singlehandedly slaughtered by the latter. Can be too easy or too hard depending your approach to these games. Always on bullet magnetism can make headshots less satisfying since they're all assisted. Voice acting can be grating.

What?: First person time trial game(similar to games like Cyber Hook, Neon White or Warstride challenges), you have a short level to go fast in while shooting various baddies in the face in stylish ways to help you go faster. Ex special forces refuses to come back for his sixth "one last job" and instead starts killing the black ops group sent to force him back.

Why?: Just a really well executed game. Levels are short and sweet(survival missions aside), music is sick, story is barebones enough not to matter but delivered in a stylish way that's enjoyable to watch and coming up with strategies to S-rank is always fun.

Link(Steam)

Cautions: Difficulty spikes near the end. Parkour levels can be boring and frustrating. Bosses range from ok changes of pace to spam the left mouse button and hope you outheal damage(the axe guy and the twin samurai) to genuienely poorly made(the giant, the one where you have to swing balls into and final boss).

What?: First person time trial arena game. Instead of a level you zoom through while killing enemies, you're locked into an arena and asked to kill X amount of enemies and go for gold times.

Why?: It's just hectic in a really fun way. Shady Knight which I'm mixed on and haven't finished yet so I will not include in this list(for now) felt like it required very clean, methodolical play in order to SSS rank which didn't sit right with me for a melee focused game. This is like playing a brawl as a one man kicking, grabbing, throwing and disarming machine and it felt exhilirating especially with how difficult it gets later.

Link(Steam)

Cautions: Two optional scenes have a cat in a cage with two fag flags on it in the background. Another optional dialog exists where a character(female) has a choice to talk about other team members - one of the character choices(also female) implies she has the hots for her. Game is made by an ex Rock Paper Shotgun employee(it's the Gunpoint/Heat Signature devs) so the dialog is very quirky, ranges from funny to annoying.

What?: Basically it's a storybased/linear Into the Breach where it's a puzzle turn based tactics game focused around setting up unit synergies and knocking enemies around with bonus extra objectives being the true meat and potatos of this game.

Why?: It's the kind of puzzle game that makes your brain go "unga" because you forumlated a plan in turn 1 that ended up finishing the entire level in that turn. Just extremely satisfying to play and the quirky lighthearted tone aside the idea of magic spec ops is cool as hell.

Link(steam)

Cautions: Haven't actually played more than an hour of this yet. Is a japanese indie game so jank is to be expected

What?: First Person single character dungeon crawler game(grid based+realtime like Grimrock/Vaporum) with a horror theme.

Why?: It's kind of like grimrock so I like it, I especially like the weakpoints system and that aiming matters during combat. Seems to have a focus on difficulty since healing is limited and certain enemies will make you shit yourself both because they're meant to be scary(you'll know it when you see it in floor 1) and because they're a difficult bastard to fight.

Link(free mod to Duke 3d)
<No up to date video>
Cautions: If you somehow thought duke nukem 3d was for coomers then I'd sit this one out because it adds more titties and hot babes on posters. Space Gladiators is FUCKING HORSESHIT(I like it)

What?: A fairly old mega-mod for Duke Nukem has been updated yet again. More episodes, more characters/weapons to pay as/with (including not-Blade), just loads of shit.

Why?: Hail to the king, baby

Another Code: Recollection and Stellar Blade are the only notable new ones I played enough to form an opinion of. ACR is good if you don't care about its minor censorship and race swapping bullshit. SB is great if you like Souls-ish combat, it's very stylish and cool.

There's some I know I'll like that I didn't try, like Spirit Hunter II and Zelda, probably Wukong.

Earth Defense Force 6 is easily my game of the year
There was drama at release about Epic Game Store bullshit.

There's some I know I'll like that I didn't try, like Spirit Hunter II and Zelda, probably Wukong.
I've not played Space Marine 2, but people really like that one. Atlyss is a furry RPG that's also doing the rounds I hear good things about. Shadow of Doubt, Crow Country, Stalker 2, and Star Trucker could also be on the list. Again, not played them.

Abiotic Factor was looking good when I played it, but I've not played the new updates. Palworld is allegedly in a bad state right now due to the Nintendo lawsuit. So I don't feel confident recommending them.

There was drama at release about Epic Game Store bullshit.
Yes, there was, and I condemn the publisher for their garbage decisions and how they handled it.
In fact, I was the one who reported about this here on this forum.
cf.
I retract my previous statement because those dipshit Jap motherfuckers are retarded

Oh yeah, nice job requiring an Epic Games account and only adding that info to the store page after the game is released (release at 25 July 2024 - 07:13:07 UTC)
Strong recommendation against buying and for refunding if you bought it
I am once again amending things I said in the past to avoid misinformation and to improve clarity.
After a lot of research and discussion, here are my findings:

Epic Online Services (EOS) is a thing that many developers use to do things such as having a cross-platform multiplayer back-end without creating one from scratch.
Many games on Steam have this.
Apparently, there are two different kinds of it: A simple kind which, for instance, uses Steam itself as the identity provider (e.g. this Steam account is verifiably a Steam account) and just handles connections between players and/or servers, and a more complicated kind with extra user or account authorization. The former is very easily implemented without any additional installs just by means of libraries.

Like this here.
This gives games EOS functionality without any installs required - and the games would silently create pseudo "accounts" so that the player would never need to visibly authenticate or log in anywhere.

As it stands, Sandlot (EDF publisher) made at least 4 fuck-ups:
[...]

However, the game is still by far one of the most fun games out there, easily the best game of the 2020s in my book.

I sorted my steam by release year and turns out that I didn't even play that many new new games and most of them weren't new releases but because of some big update steam counts them as such.

Zero Sievert
A top down "twin stick" shooter for lack of a better category. It's a clone of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. in 2d. Gameplay is really fun but it does get repetitive over time and you can easily sink a couple dozen hours into it.

Buckshot Roulette
What if Poker wasn't boring. The best multiplayer game of all times. It's the perfect vehicle for a good evening of shit talking amongst friends. Even better with booze. I didn't play the single player and have no intention to.

Men of War II.
The best RTS I have played that has been released in the past decade. Not as big of a praise as it sounds since the modern RTS market is terrible. But the devs tried and in my opinion succeeded into polishing the gameplay of the Men of War series. It has a great PVP multiplayer mode. The story campaigns are decent and the dynamic campaign system is good.

Ara History Untold.
A now decent 4X game. The game had an atrocious launch but they finally released a big overhaul update making the game a lot better. The execution still falls short of the ideas the game introduced. But personally I would play Ara over any other non Civ 4x game and to me it's more enjoyable than Civ V, but less so than Civ VI and IV.

Helldivers 2.

The only game I remotely gave a shit about this year. It's such a fun and chaotic game at it's core but there was so much mishandling and fuckery from the devs and Sony, it completely damaged the hype and goodwill people had for the game. They then went on the inexplicable course of nerfing literally almost everything, frustrating the majority of the remaining players. It honestly seemed spiteful, why else would they do that?

I stopped playing for a while, but heard it got much better again and so returned recently. It is definitely a lot of fun again. Just a pure adrenaline fueled, ass kicking, democracy spreading, popcorn type of game.

Aside from that I ain't played dick of any other new games this year, nothing else stood out to me. Hell, it was only happenstance that I even tried Helldivers at someone else house.

Selaco
a gzdoom shooter that lands somewhere between FEAR and Half-Life in execution, with some fun ideas of its own. currently in early access with only chapter one (of three) available; still very meaty despite missing roughly two-thirds of its content, lol. chapter two is nearing completion, will likely be released in the next few months (in my own personal estimation). I simp for this game.

MechWarrior 5: Clans
holy shit PGI actually managed to make a decent MechWarrior game. improves on the mediocrity of MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries in a lot of critical ways, weapon balance and squadmate AI chief among them, as well as actually having hand-made missions instead of procgen slop. also has quite a decent story, especially if you're into BattleTech lore, and some of the most convincing performance capture I've seen yet.

Witchfire
a roguelite FPS from the devs behind The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, notably including some former Painkiller/Bulletstorm people. has excellent core gameplay and gunfeel. the first zone is pretty simplistic and boring, but also doesn't take many attempts to figure out and clear; stick with it until you unlock the second.

Path of Achra
a proper roguelike RPG in the vein of Tales of Maj'Eyal, Caves of Qud, Cataclysm, etc., if you like any of those games then this one is a lock. has a crazy amount of build variety.

Halls of Torment
finally reached 1.0 a few months ago. a Vampire Survivors clone for sweatlords, often compared to Diablo 1997 due to the visual style but that's about all they have in common. requires a fair bit more investment in learning the game mechanics and build system than the average bullet heaven.

Geneforge 2 - Infestation
Spiderweb continues kicking ass with the remakes of their best series. if you've already played a Spiderweb game then you know what to expect, but the combat is a bit different this time around. a meaty but accessible turn-based SRPG with lots of exploration and loot hunting, very engaging writing, and a summoning/minion customization system that allows you to shape your party on a per-encounter basis.

Satisfactory
got its 1.0 release back in September. you've probably already heard about this one since it's attracted a lot of attention. an excellent 3D factory builder from the Sanctum TD/Goat Simulator guys, similar to Factorio but with the wonderful addition of being able to freely design factory buildings and complexes with walls, windows, ladders, walkways, etc. instead of just being a clusterfuck of structures and belts. also has a giant, contiguous, hand-made world with tons of secrets and things to find, instead of a procgen sandbox. had a lot of bugs at release but the devs have been hard at work fixing them. currently has a Christmas event going.

Unicorn Overlord
Very well done tactics rpg that plays like an RTS with pause and a big focus on unit costumization and optimization. It's really indepth and you can spend hours fiddling and tweaking set-ups. Has a bit of a difficulty issue of being too easy on the lower difficulties, but on the highest difficulty it's very engaging and will punish you hard for trying to face roll things. You can emulate it on PC. I wouldn't go into it for the writing despite the fact it has a romance mechanic. The main character, Alain, is a plank of wood. The English translation is also very flowery compared to the original Japanese, but really nothing political added in.

Aside from Dragon Ball: Sparkling Zero (out of respect for the late Akira Toriyama), I’m willing to argue that Mario & Luigi: Brothership for the Nintendo Switch was a pretty underrated title as far as Mario based games go.

warframe because DE and valve are merging and the only way you turbo nerds are getting any type of half-life 3 is through warframe 2

SUCK IT DRY, NERDS!

Warframe is actually a surprisingly sick game for a live service job simulator, I recently got back into it and have been catching up on content, it's not perfect but hovers pretty consistently between 8 and 9 out of 10 IMO. protip, if you want to do all the content in the game but skip the grind, use your plat discount coupon and buy Dante. he's OP as shit with a half-decent mod setup, and only gets better if you invest a couple formas in him and his book. press 2,2,4 and enjoy being basically unkillable

Both stellar blade and space marine 2 are fantastic. Stellar blade has attractive women and the gameplay is fairly fun, although I do think that aspect could be better. Space marine 2 is purely a chud’s game and is a callback to the 360 days.

Lorelei and the Laser Eyes is a great puzzle game. Lots of variety, nonlinear exploration, and places to get stumped only to come back later and suddenly realize how it works. Very stylish too.
