I have. It was common in ...sigh... the 90s and early 00s, when you had porn stars and even cheesecake focused actresses start to age out of that role but couldn't make the jump to being an actress carried by their ability.

One thing to remember. The clip that started this was a mostly clothed woman, in a thong, doing a dancing emote/mini game, in a game that sells itself on fanservice. I vaguely know about the satanic panic, and school shootings and how things like horror movies, metal bands, d&d or "violent videogames" often became publicly decried.

But all those things not only continued existing, but thrived. So on some level I feel like people are panicking over something that had hardly any effect at all (and probably not even born for).

Like if I could wave a wand and reset the socio/political and hobby worlds to be identical to late 80's to late 90's I would in a second.

Outside of a handful of a few exceptions the vast majority of games coming out of China and South Korea are complete trash. No, JPEG collector gambling apps aren't the pinnacle of gaming because they have hot women in them. They're not dominating anything.

And as someone who's played Marvel Rivals it's incredibly mid. There's two game modes, barely any maps, and the maps in the conquest mode all look and feel the same. Actually, it's a perfect example of this phenomenon.

The next five years or so are going to have DEI in games. Game take long to develop nowadays so there are game that were greenlighted in 2020 that are going to release over the rest of the decade and many will be woke. As long as they are being boycotted, they will serve as steps to cause other devs to reconsider, redesign and rewrite their games if only just so they can pass them as merely diverse and not outright woke.

As for Japan, they are not as isolated from western discourse as they once were. The average Jap dev will be faster in denouncing DEI by turning a woke black character into a based black character and they will be similarly faster to alter game text to remove woke talk. Japan does not need as much of a push to make a character more attractive as the West. They do not care about the skin colour of the character you ask them to design, just make them hot and they will do so with gusto. Of course we have to do our part too. Kill as many woke games and companies as possible and dangle their heads in front of the survivors telling them that this is going to be their fate if they make another woke game just like we did with Sony and Square Enix.

Even their linkedin pitches to companies won't explicitly mention diversity so they will be harder to track. The name of the game here is clamouflage.

3. Games start employing more and more Stanley Kubrick esque bait and switch / motte and bailey narrative tactics to promote forced diversity to the audience, like how Arcane's only relationships being either interracial or gay despite it surface level appearing to not possess any propaganda in the beginning. This way they can market a game without DEI and then suckerpunch you with it after you're past the first hour mark.

4. The everpresent western AAA practice of artificial forced diversity (e.g. black people in medieval Europe) will not change at all, because it supports normalising mass immigration of the third world to Western countries through media

Whilst we think we've had some sort of victory against corporate, these guys are probably in board meetings right now discussing how they can get DEI in their games without causing a public uproar. Literally a frog boiled slowly situation.

Two gamemodes and a handful of maps is barebones even for a live service launch. Halo Infinite (and that game does have its own problems) is F2P, launched with way more content than this, and was still called sparse at launch. I see people do this stuff constantly.

They aren't the pinnacle of gaming, but they are dominating and them being mediocre shows how far the standards have fallen. It's why Palworld is my go-to example for this stuff. By every measure, your typical early access survival tripe, with a novel premise that takes it from a 4/10 to a 6 or 7. Yet it brings corpo and fanboy piss to boiling point because something that should be trivial these big companies to do, but they won't because of outdated ideas about public image, political pandering, and good old fashioned incompetence.

It's not rocket surgery. Make something people like, and they'll pay money for it.

those are free to play games. free to play games were shit 20 years ago too, i distinctly remember back when they were called "korean MMO's" because they were all by korean companies that always had predatory monetization practices where they release a barely functional game f2p and make people pay for cosmetics and promise they're going to finish the game. Flyff, maplestory, malbinogi, dofus, Gunz, ragnarok online, there's even more i can't remember off the top of my head. these games target 15 year olds and they dont expect most of their player base to have their own credit card, and if you do they expect you to just buy premium

the only thing that changed is that loot boxes became big and now they're known as gatcha games, and now instead of drip feeding you tiny morsels of content, they overwhelm you with tons of useless content in loot boxes so you open up hundreds of them to find a morsel of content you actually want. if you have a gambling addiction they're hoping to milk you dry though. it's an effective monetization strategy, it's arguably more fun to play than the old system, but it's not any less predatory.
