Scenario time. You need surgery. You're living paycheck to paycheck but luckily for you, you've been paying into your jobs insurance plan and it'll cover the surgery. So you go to the hospital and they hand you a form asking "do you want to continue anesthesia if the surgery goes longer than your insurance thinks it should?". You pick one option, and unfortunately there's a minor complication and your surgery goes over.
1. Yes I'll pay. Your surgery goes normally. Afterwards you have thousands of dollars in medical debt that you can't pay off. Hard times for your family for months or years. Credit score demolished.
2. Nah I won't. I cant afford it. You have the chance of the lovecraftian horror scenario. Or the doctor doesn't want to put you into that situation and tries to rush at the end and make more mistakes.

There will be people who pick option two, because they don't want to risk putting their family through hardship. And some of those will have longer than average surgeries. I'm all for trying to use market forces to make healthcare cheaper, but call me a pinko faggot if you want, putting a timer on anesthesia isn't a good solution to anything. I realized early into this event that the angriest people have zero understanding of the healthcare system, refuse to learn, and become immediately hostile when you note any of the nuance in the scariest statistics or policy explainers going around. They are just angy and take headlines at face value. Some have legit reasons. Others are disgruntled at the lack of transparency. (Recently did an elective procedure that I was quoted at anywhere from $1200-$9600 out of pocket and wouldn’t firm up until well after procedure…what the christ)

I know enough about this sausage factory. It’s a mess of a broken system. I’ve been a victim of it so I understand the resentment. But I also can see through some of the stats as handpicked and policy as misunderstood industry terminology. I also understand many of the root causes of the mess, and cannot exclusively place it at the feet of corporate leadership. All they are trying to do is run these companies with low single digit profit margins within increasingly ridiculous parameters given to them by governments, while being pinched by providers and an aging membership that outlived actuarial predictions due to the success of the system in keeping them alive.
